Senegal’s dismal run in the 2026 World Cup has been compounded further after goalkeeper Edouard Mendy was confirmed out of their next Group I clash against Iraq.

According to a statement from the federation on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, the goalkeeper sustained a knee injury and will undergo assessment of the extent of the injury.

“Following a left knee injury sustained during the match against Norway, Edouard Mendy will be unavailable for Senegal’s next game,” the country stated.

“Further medical examinations are underway to precisely assess the nature of his injury and determine the course of his participation in the competition.”

Mendy was left needing treatment after Erling Haaland side-footed Norway’s third goal and his second past him at six yards out as the European nation ran out 3-2 winners over the African champions in Group I.

The incident proved to be a match-turning point, happening moments after Ismaila Sarr had scored a goal to send Pape Thiaw’s team back in the clash, having trailed the game by three goals.

The Crystal Palace grabbed another goal in the final moment, but it only counted for a consolation in Norway’s huge win. Holmgren Pedersen’s 42nd-minute opener and a second-half brace from Haaland saw the Viking nation join France among the teams to advance to the next rounds after back-to-back wins.

The Lion of Teranga, who entered the tournament on the high of the chaotic 2025 African Cup of Nations that saw them crowned champions against Morocco, are now in danger of crashing out of the competition early after losing 2 of their opening matches to France and Norway.

Sitting third in the group, they will need to muster new spirit and claim a win in their final group Match to stand any chance of qualifying among the eight best third-placed teams from the 12 groups.

The final round against Iraq will be held on Friday, June 26, 2026, as France and Norway contest who will advance as the group winners.
