Portugal vs Uzbekistan preview: World Cup team news, key stats and possible lineups

Portugal will be aiming to secure their first win of the 2026 FIFA World Cup when they face Uzbekistan in a Group K encounter at Houston Stadium on Tuesday evening, June 23, 2026.

After being held to a frustrating draw by DR Congo in their opening match, the Portuguese side enters the fixture under pressure to deliver a convincing performance. Meanwhile, World Cup newcomers Uzbekistan are desperate to avoid a second consecutive defeat, which would end their hopes of progressing beyond the group stage.

Portugal seeking response

The Selecao began their campaign with a 1-1 stalemate against DR Congo. Midfielder Joao Neves handed Portugal an early advantage, but Yoane Wissa equalised to deny Roberto Martinez’s men all three points.

Much of the attention after that match focused on captain Cristiano Ronaldo, whose performance drew criticism from fans and pundits alike. The veteran striker completed the full match but was unable to make a significant impact in attack, failing to register a shot on target despite attempting three efforts.

Questions have also been raised about Ronaldo’s effectiveness at World Cups, with his last goal in the tournament dating back to Portugal’s opening match against Ghana in the 2022 edition.

Portugal now have an opportunity to get their campaign back on track against an Uzbekistan side making its first appearance on football’s biggest stage.

Interestingly, Portugal have struggled recently against teams from the Asian Football Confederation, failing to win either of their last two World Cup matches against AFC opposition.

Uzbekistan chasing historic result

Uzbekistan’s World Cup debut ended in disappointment as they suffered a 3-1 defeat to Colombia in their first Group K outing.

The Central Asian nation found it difficult to create attacking opportunities for much of the contest but still managed to score their first-ever World Cup goal. The move began with Dostonbek Khamdamov keeping possession alive before Eldor Shomurodov’s volley caused problems in the Colombian penalty area. Abbosbek Fayzullaev was on hand to tap home and write his name into the nation’s football history.

However, the celebrations were short-lived. Just five minutes later, Colombia restored their lead through Luis Diaz after a swift counterattack orchestrated by Gustavo Puerta. Goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov was unable to keep out the strike.

Statistics from the match highlighted Uzbekistan’s struggles in attack. They failed to touch the ball inside Colombia’s penalty area throughout the entire first half and generated very little attacking threat before eventually finding the net with one of their few opportunities.

Now, Fabio Cannavaro’s side must produce a much-improved display if they are to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Team news

Portugal could welcome central defender Ruben Dias back into contention after he missed the opening game due to fitness concerns. Martinez previously stated that the Manchester City star was not fully fit, and the coaching staff may still be cautious about rushing him back.

Despite the criticism directed at Ronaldo after the DR Congo match, the Portuguese captain is expected to retain his place in the starting lineup.

For Uzbekistan, Cannavaro may consider a few tactical adjustments, with Khojiakbar Alijonov among the players pushing for inclusion. However, the Italian coach is likely to maintain faith in most of the players who featured against Colombia.

Yusupov should continue in goal, while Abdukodir Khusanov and Rustam Ashurmatov are expected to anchor the defence.

Probable lineups

Portugal: Diogo Costa, João Cancelo, Tomás Araújo, Renato Veiga, Nuno Mendes, João Neves, Vitinha, Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Pedro Neto, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Uzbekistan: Utkir Yusupov; Khusanov, Abdullaev, Ashurmatov; Karimov, Mozgovoy, Shukurov, Nasrullaev; Fayzullaev, Urunov, Shomurodov.
