Messi breaks silence with emotional message after Argentina’s World Cup final defeat

The Argentina captain thanked people for their support following the match and also congratulated Spain on winning the tournament.
In a statement on Monday, July 20, 2026, Messi said the tournament once again brought Argentinians together. He explained that despite the result, he was proud of how the country united behind the national team. He expressed his appreciation to everyone who sent him messages.
“The pain is so great, and it’s going to be hard for me to close this wound. But I’ll keep all the good stuff too. With the matches we turned leaving everything, and that will remain forever in the memory, with the support of an entire country that together with the work and effort of this group led us to be, once again, among the best in the world,” Messi’s statement read in part.
“Thank you very much from the heart for every greeting and for every message. Once again we managed to unite as a country and be all together, sharing the immense pride of being Argentinian,” Messi added.
The football star also took a moment to recognise Spain’s achievement. He congratulated the newly crowned world champions after they lifted the trophy following a closely contested final. His message came shortly after the tournament came to an end.
“I also want to congratulate Spain for the championship,” Messi said.
Spain end Argentina’s reign
Spain were crowned the 2026 FIFA World Cup champions after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time. The final was played at the New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. It was a tightly contested match that remained level throughout normal time before Spain scored the winning goal in extra time.
The victory earned Spain their second FIFA World Cup title. It also ended Argentina’s time as world champions after they won the tournament in Qatar in 2022. Spain completed an impressive campaign by overcoming Portugal, Belgium, France and Argentina on their way to lifting the trophy.
Argentina had entered the final hoping to defend the World Cup title they won four years earlier. Spain, on the other hand, were looking to return to the top of world football for the first time since winning the competition in 2010. The match delivered a tense battle between two of the tournament’s strongest teams.
