Deschamps took over the Les Bleus head coach role in 2012, succeeding Laurent Blanc. and had announced he would step down after the 2026 World Cup.

“All good things must come to an end. I’ll miss the French national team, but the future should be bright for them,” Deschamps remarked. “I am still young at 57. I am going to enjoy time with my family and rest first. As I always say, the best is yet to come,” the 57-year-old tactician said in a farewell message.
His imminent exit has already sparked messages of tributes from across the football world, with the French Football Federation (FFF) setting the pace as well as England manager Thomas Tuchel after their third-place clash in Miami.

“Deschamps embodied rigour, discipline, a collective spirit, and a deep love for the blue jersey. Under his leadership for fourteen years, the French National Team regained its credibility, respect, and affection while remaining at the absolute highest level worldwide.”
FFF President Philippe Diallo and captain Kylian Mbappe also shared emotional farewell messages, thanking the manager for building an enduring legacy.
“For 14 years, Didier Deschamps has shaped Les Bleus with rigour, humility, and a winning culture that will remain a benchmark,” Diallo said. “He has guided the emergence of numerous internationals, united several generations around strong values, and strengthened the unique bond between the French people and their national team.
