Romelu Lukaku was full of praise after his side’s incredible character after Belgium secured a memorable 3-2 comeback win over Senegal in the World Cup knockout round of 32 encounter on Wednesday, July 1, 2026.

Belgium’s all-time leading scorer was visibly emotional after the dramatic encounter, which saw them battle back from two goals down to turn the tie on its head in extra time and eliminate the African champions.

Belgium’s improbable comeback

The Red Devils looked all but bundled out of the competition, trailing 2-0 until the 86th minute. In a stunning turn of events, quick-fire goals from the burly striker and Youri Tielemans levelled the score to send the thrilling encounter to extra time.

A delicately poised period of extra time before a surreal late winner turned the tables on the Lions of Teranga to seal their fate.

“I have had enough of these matches! It was intense, but we gave it our all. We were trailing, but we showed character. In matches like this, that is what it takes,” he told FIFA.

The former Chelsea man also reserved praise for the AFCON 2025 champions, describing them as a proper tactically astute and formidable side.

“This Senegal side is one of the best teams in the tournament. Technically, physically, and tactically, it was really tough. But when we stepped up the intensity of our pressing, when we were there for the second ball, our team spirit shone through, and we won the match,” he added.

The clash marked yet another match where the Red Devils failed to impose their style and dominance, following a bumpy group stage where they only managed a single victory in their final game.

However, the former Premier League star is not losing faith in their capabilities, stating that these gutsy victories could be exactly what galvanises the team and fuels a deep tournament run.

“It is victories like this that we need to bring this squad even closer together. [On his goal] I think it is my dad up there helping me. [On the fact that he was originally supposed to take the penalty] As I am still going through a tough time mentally, I prefer Youri to take it,” he opined.

The nation will now face the co-hosts, the USA, in the next rounds.
