Germany aim to reclaim lost glory in Group E of 2026 FIFA World Cup
By Joel Masibo, June 6, 2026Germany heads into the 2026 FIFA World Cup determined to erase the memories of two disappointing campaigns and re-establish itself as a genuine contender on the global stage. Standing in their way in Group E are a disciplined Ecuador side, an ambitious Côte d’Ivoire team, and tournament newcomers Curaçao, who are eager to make history.
After suffering early exits in both the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, Germany arrives at this year’s tournament under pressure to deliver. Head coach Julian Nagelsmann has been entrusted with rebuilding confidence and restoring the nation’s status among football’s heavyweights.
There have been encouraging signs. Germany showed improvement during Euro 2024, where they pushed eventual champions Spain all the way to extra time. Although their World Cup qualifying campaign began with a setback against Slovakia, the Germans bounced back impressively, winning five consecutive matches while displaying both attacking efficiency and defensive solidity.

Nagelsmann has assembled a squad that combines experienced leaders with exciting young stars. Veterans Joshua Kimmich and Antonio Rudiger provide stability, while creative talents Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz offer flair and imagination in attack.
Key players
Jamal Musiala continues to be one of Germany’s brightest talents. The Bayern Munich star possesses exceptional dribbling ability, quick feet and the confidence to unlock stubborn defenses, making him one of the tournament’s most exciting players.
Florian Wirtz experienced a challenging first season following his move to Liverpool, but his performances improved significantly during the second half of the campaign. His creativity, vision and goal-scoring threat could prove vital to Germany’s ambitions.
Tough opposition
The former champions will have to face tough sides in the pool. Ecuador enters its fifth World Cup appearance hoping to achieve something it has never managed before, reach the quarterfinal stage. Since its breakthrough run to the last 16 in 2006, the South American nation has struggled to progress beyond the group phase.
Under coach Sebastian Beccacece, Ecuador has developed into one of the continent’s most organized teams. Defensive discipline became the foundation of a successful qualification campaign in which they finished near the top of the standings.
Veteran striker Enner Valencia remains the heartbeat of Ecuador’s attack. Even at 36, he continues to lead from the front and recently marked a major international milestone with a decisive goal against Argentina.
Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo will be central to Ecuador’s hopes. His energy, ball-winning ability and composure in possession make him one of the most important players in the squad.
Côte d’Ivoire
Returning to the World Cup for the first time since 2014, Côte d’Ivoire is aiming to advance beyond the group stage for the first time in its history.
The Elephants enjoyed an impressive qualification campaign and arrive with a balanced squad capable of adapting to different situations. Coach Emerse Fae has built a side that can dominate possession when required or remain compact and strike on the counterattack.
Amad Diallo has developed into one of the Premier League’s standout attacking talents. His pace, technical quality and ability to create chances make him Côte d’Ivoire’s biggest offensive weapon.

Meanwhile, Curaçao’s qualification represents one of the most remarkable stories of the tournament. The Caribbean nation, with a relatively small population, secured its place after edging past Jamaica during the qualification process.
The team’s strong ties to Dutch football have helped its development, while experienced coach Dick Advocaat brings decades of managerial expertise. Although Curaçao enters the competition as the group’s outsider, its journey to the finals has already exceeded expectations.
Tahith Chong is the most recognisable member of the squad. Having played for several clubs across Europe, the versatile midfielder brings valuable experience and attacking quality.
Germany enters Group E as the clear favorite to secure top spot, but the battle for second place appears wide open. Ecuador’s defensive strength, Côte d’Ivoire’s tactical versatility and Curaçao’s underdog spirit should ensure a fiercely competitive group stage. If Germany performs to its potential, it should progress comfortably, while the contest for the remaining qualification place could go down to the final round of matches.
