Bruno Fernandes inspires Portugal past Chile in World Cup warm-up
By Joel Masibo, June 7, 2026Portugal strengthened their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 2-1 victory over Chile in Lisbon on Saturday, June 6, 2026, but while the result pleased coach Roberto Martinez, the performance once again highlighted the growing influence of Bruno Fernandes and raised fresh questions about the effectiveness of captain Cristiano Ronaldo.
Fernandes delivered another commanding display in midfield, dictating play and capping off his performance with a superb long-range finish that doubled Portugal’s lead in the second half. The Manchester United skipper was involved throughout, linking attacks and providing the creativity that helped unlock a stubborn Chilean side.
First half action
Portugal had endured a frustrating first half despite controlling possession. Ronaldo showed glimpses of quality with a clever backheel that released a teammate into space, but the veteran forward struggled to make a significant impact in the final third. His best opportunity was ruled out after he drifted offside, and he was largely isolated before being substituted at the interval.
The match took a dramatic turn just before halftime when winger Rafael Leao was sent off following an altercation with Chile defender Ivan Ramon. Both players received straight red cards after clashing near the touchline, leaving Portugal a man short.

Despite the setback, Martinez’s halftime changes proved decisive. Midfielder Ruben Neves immediately made an impact by threading an excellent pass through the Chilean defence for substitute Goncalo Guedes, who calmly controlled and finished to give Portugal the lead.
Ronaldo’s and Guedes’ effect
In a match with little to talk about on Christiano Ronaldo, Guedes’ introduction added fresh energy to the attack and further exposed Ronaldo’s quiet outing. The striker not only scored Portugal’s opener but also played a key role in creating additional opportunities as Chile struggled to contain the hosts.
Fernandes then sealed what proved to be the winning goal. After a neat combination involving Guedes and Francisco Conceicao, the midfielder unleashed a precise strike from outside the penalty area that left the goalkeeper with little chance.
Chile managed to reduce the deficit in the closing moments through Lucas Cepeda, whose low effort from distance found the net, but Portugal held firm to secure victory.

As Portugal approaches the World Cup, Fernandes continues to underline his importance to the national team. While Ronaldo remains a global icon and the face of Portuguese football, it was Fernandes who once again emerged as the driving force behind the Seleção’s success, producing the kind of influential performance that could be crucial when the tournament begins in North America.
