What’s next for Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards after fierce FKF PL contest

By , May 27, 2026

With the Football Kenya Federation title race wrapped up on Sunday, May 24, 2026, there is still plenty remaining to be decided as the curtain closes on another thrilling FKF PL year.

AFC Leopards’ surprise defeat to AS Bomet did pull the plug on their league title ambitions, but there remains much to play for with pride and both team and individual awards up for grabs at the end of the season.

The contest between Leopards and Gor Mahia in the season has been one for the books, as for the first time in over a decade, two arch-rivals and headline names of the Kenyan football league went toe-to-toe in a thrilling race.

Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards have traditionally defined the Kenyan football rivalry, and the taste of the same was on show in the 2025 season. A seesaw contest between them eventually shifted to Gor Mahia’s favour after the Mashemeji Derby win.

In an emotional statement on Monday, May 25, 2026, AFC Leopards conceded the title chances for the season. The heartfelt title concession was highlighted with a standing tribute to its fans for the support throughout the journey.

Painful end

“Our second-to-last match of the league painfully ended in defeat in the hands of the hosts, APS Bomet.

“We take this opportunity to appreciate all the fans who took their time and resources to travel to Kericho ; you filled the stadium and supported the team throughout the entire match,” a concession statement after the loss from the club read.

“We have one more match left for the weekend, where we will be hosting Bidco United,” the statement read.

League finale

The new record 22 league champions, on their part, turn their focus on wrapping up their league campaign in style as they face Nairobi United in the league final on May 31, 2026.

With Gor already crowned the new champions, K’Ogalo will be out to get one over the team that denied them a trophy in 2025 after the heartbreaking defeat in the FKF Cup finals that saw their season conclude on a trophyless campaign.

End season awards

Just like Gor Mahia, league runner-up Ingwe faces the remaining league games, keen to step up their chase for individual end-of-season awards, where the club is expected to feature imminently after a standout season.

According to a preliminary report, the 2025/26 league end-of-season awards gala, set to take place on June 4, 2026, will have more than 15 categories up for grabs.

The crowns up for grabs include the fair play awards, the Golden Boot award, the league’s best player in every playing category, and many others.

For the players, the fierce battles for top prizes, as witnessed throughout the league, make for a motivated and strong ending to the campaign.

Gor’s most immediate fixture will go down this Wednesday, May 27, 2026, as they visit Mara Sugar for their penultimate FKF PL tie.

The clash will kick off at 2:00 pm.
