WaveLight technology to make debut at 2026 Kip Keino Classic
By Joel Masibo, March 28, 2026The 2026 Kip Keino Classic is poised to scale greater heights in this year’s edition with the rollout of WaveLight technology, a move expected to deliver quicker performances and a more engaging atmosphere for spectators at Nyayo National Stadium on Friday, April 24, 2026.
Commonly seen at top-tier Diamond League competitions, WaveLight involves LED strips installed along the inner edge of the track that illuminate at programmed speeds. This innovation helps runners stick to a desired pace, whether they are chasing global records or personal milestones, while also adding a visual thrill for fans.
In another key adjustment, the competition will take place between 4:00 pm and 9:00 pm, introducing a late-day format aimed at increasing international exposure and offering a prime-time showcase of athletics.
High tech under the lights
Event director Barnaba Korir has confirmed that Kenyan fans will witness the system in action for the very first time.
“We want to try WaveLight this time because it helps produce fast times and gives athletes something to follow,” Korir said. “If we are targeting specific times in an event, the system allows athletes to track the pace easily and hit those marks.”
He further noted that specialists have already assessed the venue to guarantee smooth integration of the new feature.

“We have already had a team here for inspections, and discussions are ongoing on how best to incorporate it into the programme,” he explained.
Korir also underscored the advantages of staging the meet in the evening, aligning it with global standards.
“In most major events, including the Diamond League and other Continental Tour meetings, races are held in the evening. It is much better for television production and global viewership,” Korir said.
Meanwhile, reigning world and Olympic hammer throw king Ethan Katzberg is set to be the star attraction at this year’s Kip Keino Classic, with Nairobi gearing up for an electrifying showcase of top-tier athletics.

In its seventh staging, the high-profile competition will introduce a groundbreaking element, as organisers schedule events under floodlights for the very first time.
The evening session is anticipated to create a vibrant and high-energy setting as elite competitors step into the spotlight.Meeting director Barnaba Korir confirmed Katzberg’s attendance, describing the Canadian’s inclusion as a significant lift to the event’s rising global stature.
This is after Korir has revealed that preparations for the upcoming showpiece have gathered momentum following a recent high-level inspection at Nyayo National Stadium, the main venue for the event.
