Wanyama and Mariga complete Sports Law and Governance programme
Former Harambee Stars captains and football icons Victor Wanyama and McDonald Mariga have successfully completed an Executive Programme in Sports Law, Policy and Governance offered by Strathmore Law School, marking another milestone in their continued contribution to the development of sports beyond the pitch.
The two brothers were among participants in the programme, which brought together professionals from various sectors to deepen their understanding of the legal, policy and governance structures that shape modern sports.
Sports law and governance entail the specialised legal frameworks and internal regulations that manage the business, ethics, and operations of the sports industry. This multidisciplinary field ensures fairness, protects athlete rights, and maintains the integrity of competitions through organisational oversight and dispute resolution.

Wanyama’s and Mariga’s participation in the programme highlights the growing importance of equipping athletes with knowledge and skills that extend beyond competition and performance.
Having represented Kenya at the highest levels of international football, the duo brought valuable insights and first-hand experience on the realities and challenges facing today’s sporting environment.
“Their participation is a reflection of how excellence in sport extends beyond the field of play to include an understanding of the legal, policy and governance frameworks that shape the sporting ecosystem,” the learning institution said in brief on Tuesday, June 23, 2026.
The institution noted that excellence in sport is not only measured by achievements on the field but also by an understanding of the frameworks that govern sports organisations, athlete welfare, integrity, and administration.

Brotherly achievements
Wanyama, who made history as the first Kenyan to play in the English Premier League, enjoyed successful spells with clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur, Southampton FC and Celtic FC. Mariga, meanwhile, remains one of Kenya’s most celebrated football exports after becoming the first Kenyan to win the UEFA Champions League during his time with Inter Milan. He is now the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) vice president.
The institution congratulated Wanyama and Mariga on completing the programme and thanked them for being part of the cohort. Their participation, the school added, demonstrates how athletes can leverage their experience and influence to contribute to the growth, governance and professionalism of sport long after their playing careers.

“We thank Victor and Mariga for being part of this cohort and congratulate them on successfully completing the programme.” The statement said.
Wanyama’s coaching path
After announcing his retirement from professional football in early April 2026, Victor Wanyama has stepped away from the pitch to remain engaged in the game via a managerial role.
“I now take my next step into coaching, where I will be completing my UEFA A License this year,” stated Wanyama, who officially retired from international football with the Harambee Stars in September 2021.
The move follows a famous path that other iconic footballers across the world have taken after ending their playing days.
