Sports CS Mvurya reassures public on Kenya’s AFCON 2027 preparedness

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has moved to dispel concerns regarding Kenya’s ability to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

In a statement issued on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, Mvurya addressed anxieties over the country’s capacity to meet the financial obligations required to host the continental showpiece.

Assuring the public of Kenya’s readiness, the CS noted that the government is already engaging various departments to ensure both the infrastructure and the necessary funding are secured on time.

Ready

“As Kenya prepares for AFCON, which will be hosted alongside Uganda and Tanzania, I want to assure all Kenyans and stakeholders that we are ready,” Mvurya stated.

“While there has been conflicting reporting, matters of financing and hosting fees are simply part of the process. We are already engaging parliamentary committees and the Treasury to ensure we meet our obligations. Kenya is ready to host the best AFCON the region has ever seen.”

FKF echoes optimism

His remarks come shortly after Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed maintained a similarly upbeat stance.

Speaking to a local TV station on Monday, March 23, 2026, Mohammed recalled the cynicism that preceded the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in September 2025, noting that the federation ultimately surpassed expectations.

Proved wrong

“During CHAN, there was a lot of negativity around whether we could host the tournament, but we proved everyone wrong,” Mohammed said.

“If you look at major sporting events in this country, from CHAN to the Safari Rally and international rugby, they have been spectacular. I have the confidence that the country has the capacity to host this tournament,” he stated.

Mohammed also spoke on the prevailing controversy between the KWPL teams and the federation over the delays on the Women’s Fund kitty.

ongoing controversy between the federation and Kenya Women’s Premier League (KWPL) clubs.

He went on record stating that the federation is yet to receive any disbursement from the Women’s Development Fund.

“It is important to be honest and genuine; the truth is that, to date, we have not received any monies for the women’s development kitty since we took office,” Mohammed stated. “Right now, we are finalising a strategic plan to submit to FIFA to unlock the funds once we have met all the necessary requirements.”

The matter has been a bone of contention, leading to fixture boycotts by a section of KWPL teams in recent weeks.
