Skater Kevin Kiarie admits receiving only Ksh870K out of Ksh2M govt pledge
By Joel Masibo, May 24, 2026Kenyan skating star Kevin Kiarie has shared an emotional update on his journey after taking Africa by storm in recent premier skating championships, revealing that he has only received part of the Ksh2.78 million that had reportedly been pledged by the state to support his career.
Kiarie, who recently arrived from Egypt with two gold medals from different categories, has become one of the country’s fastest-rising sporting talents through his performances on the continental stage, on Saturday, May 23, 2026.

After jetting back from Egypt two weeks ago, Kiarie held a discussion with Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi, who notified him that the government would compensate him to a tune of Ksh2.78 million following his exploits in North Africa using personal resources.
“During our discussion in that meeting, it was agreed that every gold medal would fetch me a total of Ksh750,000, every silver Ksh500, 000. When you sum up three gold medals plus silver, we agreed that I would leave that office with Ksh2.78 million, contrary to what I got yesterday.” Kiarie revealed.
Before the government’s intervention, Kiarie has been solely relying on contributions from well-wishers, friends and family to cater for his logistics while flying the country’s flag high in international skating contests. He has also expressed gratitude to Kenyans for standing with him throughout his journey while also shedding light on the financial hurdles he continues to face.
Navigating challenges
In a heartfelt statement, the skater explained how public contributions and government support have helped him navigate school fees, travel expenses, debts, and preparations for international competitions.
“I am proud for the journey we’ve been able to walk together as Kenyans. We have been a strong team in this journey,” Kiarie said.
According to the athlete, Kenyans first raised Ksh220,000 during his trip to Benin, money that enabled him to continue with school and fund his travel to Egypt. He later received another Ksh135,000 after the Egypt competition, which he used to clear part of his debts.

Kiarie also disclosed that an additional Ksh200,000 raised during a live TV event helped him settle more financial obligations while saving part of the amount. Ahead of his planned trip to China for another event, supporters again came through with Ksh148,000, bringing the total public contributions to Ksh703,000.
The skater further acknowledged receiving Ksh870,000 from the Ministry as a cash award for his medal-winning exploits, although he noted that a detailed breakdown of the payment is expected on Monday.
“I would also like to acknowledge that yesterday in the evening, the ministry disbursed money said to be cash award for the medals Ksh870,000,” he stated.
Failed pledge
Despite the support already received, Kiarie revealed that he is yet to obtain a further Ksh380,000 reimbursement meant for his Egypt trip. He said the funds had reportedly been sent to the Kenya Skating Federation but had not reached him yet.

At the same time, the athlete admitted he is facing visa-related challenges ahead of his intended trip to China, though he remains optimistic that the situation will be resolved soon.
“I have had some challenges on my Visa to China but I am still on it and will keep you posted,” he added.
As Kevin Kiarie continues to chase greater success on both international and global stages, many supporters will be hoping the remaining pledged funds are released to ease his preparations and help him focus fully on competition.
