Shabana’s Gusii Stadium’s Ksh1B facelift kicks off
By Luke Oluoch, May 10, 2026Construction works for the Gusii Stadium upgrade project started in earnest this Sunday, May 10, 2026, marking a major milestone for sports infrastructure in the country.
In an update on its Facebook page, Shabana FC confirmed the commencement of the Ksh1 billion project.
The groundbreaking was officiated by President William Ruto during his visit to the county on April 12, 2026, a visit that also coincided with the official handing over of a new team bus, valued at Ksh27 million, to the FKF Premier League outfit.

The club noted that the works have kicked off with the demolition of all existing stadium stands.
“The construction works at Gusii Stadium have officially begun. Today, Sunday, 10th May 2026, the contractor started demolishing all the stadium stands,” the statement read.
New canopy and eight lanes
According to the timeline provided by the Ministry of Defence, the project to elevate the facility to international standards will take nine months. The upgrade is expected to transform the county stadium into a FIFA-standard pitch equipped with an eight-lane running track. In addition to increased seating capacity, the venue will feature a fitted canopy and modern changing rooms.
“The stadium is set to undergo a major upgrade to international standards, with construction expected to last at least nine months. Once the renovation is complete, the VVIP section and changing rooms will be relocated to the current G7 area,” the statement added.

While commissioning the work, President Ruto explained that the redevelopment of Gusii Stadium is designed to provide sports personalities with a superior platform to train and compete, aligning the facility with global expectations.
He further outlined that the project is part of a broader national programme targeting the construction and upgrading of multiple sports facilities to support youth development and sports growth.
“This is part of our program of building world-class sporting infrastructure, including Talanta Sports City Stadium, and delivering 25 new facilities while upgrading existing ones across the country,” the president noted.
Defence PS Patrick Mariru confirmed that the upgrade will be spearheaded and supervised by the Ministry of Defence in partnership with the Ministry of Sports and the Kisii County Government.
