Omondi explains why Sofapaka encounter poses challenge of its own for Gor Mahia

By , January 30, 2026

Gor Mahia custodian Bryne Omondi has explained why he feels the club’s next league encounter against Sofapaka on Saturday, January 31, 2026, will come with its own unique challenge.

Speaking on Friday, January 30, 2026, ahead of the league encounter, Omondi dismissed assertions that the struggling Ezekiel Akwana’s side will be a walk-through for them going by their poor run of form.

“We are prepared for Saturday. It won’t be easy, as Gor against Sofapaka has never been an easy match, even going by the past games between the two. It will be another tough encounter, and we are prepared.

He added that the levels of competitiveness of the league standings add another spice to the match as the log leaders seek to continue their stay at the summit of the standings.

“We know every match we play is a must-win for us going by the competitive nature of how the league standings are,” he stated.

The Week 19 clash presents K’Ogalo with the perfect chance of extending its stay on top of the standings, with close rivals and challengers AFC Leopards set to be out of action following the postponement of their week engagement.

Gor, who are on a run of unbeaten games, are currently leading the standings by 36 points, the same as Leopards, who have amassed similar points despite taking to the pitch more than their cross-town rivals.

Surviving scares

Omondi’s sentiments mirror those made by assistant coach Bismark about how their next league opponents could turn out.

In an interview with the club, the Ghanaian trainer warned against the threat posed by the side ranked second from bottom in the standings.

The tactician noted that there will be a lot to work on as a team after surviving the Bidco United scare. Gor Mahia were forced to dig deep into the dying minutes of the game to complete a 2-1 comeback against Bidco United after conceding first.

”From our last game, the players did well. There are so many areas that I think we need to improve technically. We started working on it. We have had a lot of seriousness to our preparation, and I think we will be ready by Saturday,” Bismark noted.

Touching on the danger that Sofapaka could pose, Bismark said they keenly followed their opponent’s last league encounter against AFC Leopards on Sunday, January 25, 2026, adding that the team has a plan to pin down Ezekiel Akwana’s men at Nyayo.

”We watched them against AFC Leopards; they are a good team, and from what we saw, I think we have a plan on how to approach the game. We are going to be serious about it. It is a team that I think is good,” he added.

K’Ogalo was handed mixed injury news with the return of the midfield pair of Ben Stanley Omondi and Lawrence Juma. They will, however, contend with the absence of the club’s current top scorer with seven goals, Felix Oluoch, who is sidelined indefinitely with a knee injury.

The club will also be eyeing a debut from the former AFC Leopards skipper, who resumed training with the club after a spell on the sidelines.
