Nyayo Stadium availability for Kip Keino Classic boosts Mashemeji Derby hopes

By , February 20, 2026

The confirmation that Nyayo National Stadium will host this year’s Kip Keino Classic on Friday, April 24, 2026, has provided a major lift to the prospects of staging the second leg of the Mashemeji Derby in Nairobi.

This will ease earlier concerns over venue availability for the FKF Premier League blockbuster clash between AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia on Sunday, April 26, 2026.

Mahemeji Derby uncertainty

Uncertainty had surrounded the availability of Nyayo due to fears that the stadium would be temporarily shut for renovation works ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). With the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, already closed, top-flight clubs, particularly those based in Nairobi, were facing the real possibility of a severe shortage of suitable match venues.

This looming challenge threatened to directly impact the highly anticipated Mashemeji Derby, as Nyayo and Kasarani remain the only grounds capable of accommodating the massive following drawn by both AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia.

However, fresh optimism has emerged following revelations that Nyayo is set to stage the Kip Keino Classic on Friday, April 24, just two days before the derby’s tentative date. The decision to host the international athletics event at the facility strongly suggests that the stadium will remain operational, significantly boosting hopes that the derby can proceed at the venue.

Athletics Kenya Youth Development Chairperson Barnaba Korir disclosed on his X account on Thursday, February 19, 2026, that he had held discussions with the new Sports Kenya Director General, alongside other officials, to finalise arrangements for the event. He expressed confidence that Nyayo would indeed host the prestigious meet.

”Today at the Nyayo National Stadium, I met with Sports Stadia Director General Mr. Timothy Kilimo, Julius, Diana, and Jimmy as we work to confirm the venue for the Kip Keino Classic on April 24. The chances are very high that we’ll host it here!” Korir said.

Nyayo previously served as one of the venues for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), hosting several Group A matches, though Kenya’s Harambee Stars featured at Kasarani.

AFCON duties

Earlier, the Local Organising Committee chairman for the 2027 AFCON, Nicholas Musonye, had indicated that Nyayo had been earmarked primarily as a training venue for the tournament, with the possibility of being cleared to host select low-risk matches.

Should the stadium remain accessible, it would offer a timely reprieve to FKF Premier League clubs and significantly enhance the likelihood of the Mashemeji Derby being played at a venue befitting its status and enormous fan appeal.

Before the April events, Nyayo is expected to stage this weekend’s FKF Premier League fixtures, where AFC Leopards will entertain Posta Rangers on Saturday, February 21, 2026. On Sunday, February 22, 2026, the facility will stage another league match between Gor Mahia and KCB.
