Nairobi United miss out millions from CAF after Confederation Cup exit
By Joel Masibo, February 2, 2026Nairobi United’s maiden CAF Confederation Cup adventure has officially come to an early end, with the club mathematically ruled out of qualifying for the quarter-finals despite having two group-stage matches still to play.
Aside from crushing out of the competition at group stages, Naibois have also lost off the pitch in matters of CAF participatory fund disbursements.

Naibois lose millions
After initially pocketing $400,000 (Ksh51.9 million) for reaching the group stage, the team will miss out on $550,000 (Ksh71.4 million), which will be awarded to the eight teams that will reach the Confederation Cup quarter-final.
The lucrative amount could have been a shot in the arm for the Football Kenya Federation Premier League club, based on the financial constraints bedevilling most Kenyan clubs.
Nairobi United has endured a difficult debut at the continental level, losing all four of its Group B matches so far and sitting at the bottom of the pool with zero points. Even if the outfit were to secure victories in their remaining two fixtures, their maximum possible points tally would still fall short of the qualification threshold.
Tough continental outing
Their struggles were highlighted early on with a heavy 3–0 defeat away to Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca, a result that set the tone for a challenging campaign. Back on home soil, Nairobi United suffered a narrow 1–0 loss to AS Maniema Union of the Democratic Republic of Congo in Nairobi, before falling 2–1 to Tanzania’s Azam FC, also at home.
The return leg against Azam in Zanzibar on Sunday, February 1, 2026, ended in another setback, as Nairobi United went down 1–0, extending their losing run.

After four matches, Nairobi United’s group-stage record paints a grim picture. They have managed just one goal scored, conceded seven, and remain without a single point. The results have underlined the steep learning curve facing the club as they adjust to the demands and intensity of continental football.
Nairobi United still have two fixtures left to honour, a home clash against Wydad Casablanca in Nairobi, and an away encounter with AS Maniema Union in the DR Congo. While qualification is no longer possible, the remaining matches offer the team a chance to restore pride, gain valuable experience, and register their first points and possibly first win on the African stage.
