Mvurya meets new CAF SG, gives AFCON update
By Joel Masibo, April 14, 2026Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania delegations will meet on Thursday, April 23, 2026, to foster a roadmap for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations that will be jointly co-hosted by the three East African neighbours.
Speaking on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, Cabinet Secretary for Sports Salim Mvurya revealed that delegates from the host nations will be discussing a myriad of issues, including visa and tax exemption, during the much-awaited continental tourney.
CS Mvurya spoke at his Talanta Office in Nairobi as he received the new CAF Acting Secretary General, Samson Adamu, reiterating the government of Kenya’s commitment to staging a world-class AFCON.

Scheduled meeting
“There are a number of decisions that will be made next week because we will be having a Pamoja meeting that will bring together Ministers to discuss matters such as visas, tax exemptions and many others, and CAF will be the key facilitator of the event. We will be announcing the road map that will guide the three East African countries towards the AFCON 2027,” he said.
“We had a brief courtesy meeting, and the first point as a government is to congratulate him for his new responsibility and reaffirm the commitment of the government of Kenya to host the AFCON, and right now we have a lot of activities before us to make sure we host a successful tournament,” the CS added.
CS Mvurya also congratulated Adamu following his promotion to the position of Acting General Secretary, having previously served as the continental football body’s Director of competition.
Official handover
Further, the CS witnessed the official handover ceremony to welcome the 2027 AFCON Chair, Nicholas Musonye, alongside the incoming CEO, Antony Lungaho.
He commended the CHAN 2025 team, led by CEO Mike Rabar, for delivering an outstanding tournament and for firmly positioning Kenya on the continental and global stage through world-class delivery and professionalism.

Meanwhile, the series of meetings follows the Kenyan government official establishment of the Pamoja Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027 Local Organising Committee (LOC), shortly after the government had remitted the required Ksh3.9 billion hosting fee for the tournament.
The committee will be led by Musonye as the chairman and Football Kenya Federation President Hussein Mohammed, his assistant, marking a major step in preparations for the historic continental tournament that Kenya will co-host with Tanzania and Uganda.
