Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, Salim Mvurya, has revealed details of a high-level consultative meeting with Nairobi City County Governor, Johnson Sakaja, aimed at strengthening sports development and youth empowerment initiatives within the capital.

According to Mvurya, the discussions held on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, focused on expanding Nairobi’s role as a leading hub for sports on the African continent while also creating more opportunities for young people to nurture their talents.

Mvurya noted that the National Government, working closely with the Nairobi City County Government, has already launched an ambitious programme to renovate, construct and upgrade community sports grounds across various parts of the city. The project is expected to significantly improve access to modern sporting facilities for residents at the grassroots level.

Revamping sports infrastructure

The planned upgrades will transform the grounds into modern multi-sport complexes designed to host disciplines such as football, netball, athletics, basketball and rugby. Mvurya explained that the move is intended to broaden participation in sports.

”These modern facilities will accommodate football, netball, athletics, basketball, and rugby disciplines, creating inclusive multi-sport centres that will expand access to opportunity, nurture grassroots talent, promote social cohesion, and strengthen the long-term sustainability of the sports ecosystem in Nairobi,” Mvurya said.

Beyond infrastructure, the meeting also explored strategies to position Nairobi as a world-class destination during major global sporting events, including the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations 2027. The leaders discussed collaborative efforts that will enhance tourism, improve fan experiences and create new business opportunities tied to the sporting calendar.

Mvurya emphasized that such international events offer a platform to showcase Nairobi as a vibrant gateway for sports, culture, hospitality and investment, while also stimulating economic growth within the city.
