Mathare Utd coach: AFC Leopards should have shipped in 8 goals

Mathare United head coach John Kamau has said AFC Leopards were lucky to concede only four goals against his men in a Football Kenya Federation Premier League tie played at Nyayo Stadium on Saturday, March 14, 2026.

The 2008 league champions came from a goal down to register their biggest win of the season so far, trashing Ingwe 4-1 to dent their title hopes. The defeat left fans furious, compelling them to confront AFC Leopards officials and players.

Speaking shortly after the emphatic win, Kamau said Leopards should have lost by a bigger margin, but Mathare United failed to convert their created scoring opportunities.

Lucky Leopards!

”AFC Leopards are lucky, it was supposed to be 7-0 or 8-0, because we created a lot of scoring opportunities in the first half. At some point, we got frustrated because we did not convert those chances,” Kamau stated.

The tactician further said the lads showed improvement against AFC Leopards, compared to their previous fixtures, among them the defeat against league leaders Gor Mahia.

”I am happy with the team because we have learned from our own mistakes. Against Gor Mahia, we equalised and got excited, and we were punished. This time around, after equalising, we were very cautious with what we were doing,” he added.

Leopards slip

Victor Omune struck the first blood from Ronald Sichenje’s cross to put Ingwe to a deserved lead at the hour mark. Fred Ambani’s team, however, inexplicably lost themselves after taking the lead as Mathare United took the game to them.

Brian Ouru restored parity in the 77th minute to spark the comeback. The Slum boys then turned the game on its head with Ouru completing his double with seven minutes left. Isaac Omweri ensured the goal fest continued with a third strike before Ian Omondi hit the final nail in the Leopards’ coffin.

The defeat now leaves Leopards in second place, trailing league leaders Gor Mahia with seven points. K’Ogalo will be keen to widen the gap further if the leaders win on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at Ulinzi Stars at the Ulinzi Sports Complex.
