Tear gas and chaos rock Tusker Super Cup coronation after win over Gor Mahia

The 2026 Football Kenya Federation Super Cup clash pitting Gor Mahia and Tusker FC was marred by chaotic scenes as police were forced to fire tear gas to disperse unruly fans during the Sunday, August 23, 2026, encounter.

The Brewers laid down an early-season marker with a deserved 3–1 win over the reigning league champions, only for a section of frustrated fans and police intervention to momentarily disrupt the coronation.

Teargas melee

The ugly scenes erupted shortly after the final whistle, with fans expressing frustration over tear gas being lobbed near their section. Angered by both the police actions and the events on the pitch, unruly spectators – those who remained after a section staged a walk-off before the final whistle – stormed the field and dismantled the dais prepared for the trophy presentation.

Law enforcement officers responded by firing additional tear gas to restore order.

Members of the press were caught in the middle of the chaos as police indiscriminately targeted the crowd, with several journalists later reporting damaged equipment and injuries. The turmoil escalated despite pleas from Gor Mahia’s vice-chairman, Sally Bolo, who also tried to implore the fans against dismantling the presentation stage.

Sanity was eventually restored, allowing the Brewers to receive their prize. FKF President Hussein Mohammed officially presented the trophy to captain Chrispine Erambo to seal the victory.

The triumph hands Tusker their first major silverware of the 2026/27 campaign, marking another milestone for their new gaffer, Julien Mette, who previously guided the club to the 2026 Shield Cup title in May.

Meanwhile, Gor Mahia bow out with pressing questions to address as they prepare to begin their league title defence in a week’s time. The defeat was the second time K’Ogalo faltered in a final following the CECAFA Kagame Cup implosion in Rwanda, culminating in a 2-1 loss to eventual champions Rayon Sports.

After returning to the country afterwards, Gor edged Migori Youth FC to win the Green Legacy Cup on post-match penalties after battling from 2-0 down to draw level after normal time.

“Congratulations to Tusker FC on winning the FKF Super Cup! A strong statement to open the new season. Well done to the players, technical team, and everyone at the club on a deserved triumph,” read the official FKF congratulatory message to the victors.
