Gor Mahia name new first-team captains

Gor Mahia centre-back Sylvester Owino will skipper the Kenyan Premier League champions going forward after being officially named as the new captain.
K’Ogalo has picked the Harambee Stars defender as the successor to long-serving skipper Philemon Otieno, who left the club after the end of the 2026 season.
Owino will be assisted by Mike Kibwage and Alpha Onyango, a youth team graduate, as his vice-captains, ushering a new leadership structure tasked with discipline and liaison between the playing unit and members of the coaching staff and the club’s management.
In the absence of the three senior leaders, Lawrence Juma and Ebenezer Assifuah will step up to take charge of the team.
Owino joined K’Ogalo in 2022 from Kakamega Homeboyz, and went on to make his central position his, amid tight competition within the club from Michael Kibwage and Frank Odhiambo during the run-up to their league triumph last season.
New season
While confirming the news, Gor affirmed that the decision to appoint Owino was jointly made by the club’s technical bench and management, who cited his outstanding performances and unwavering dedication since arriving at the club.
Owino already has the feel of skippering the team after leading them out in the preseason defeat to Rwandan outfit, Rayon Sports in Saturday, July 18, 2026, exhibition match that ended in a 2-0 loss.
The friendly encounter at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali saw K’Ogalo’s new signings, including highly-rated goalkeeper Humphrey Katasi and the attacking pair of Hansel Ochieng and Enock Machaka, all assessed by the technical staff.
The group is part of the club’s summer signing spree, which also saw the club rope in goalkeeper Michael Onyango, defenders Daniel Sakari and Lesley Otieno, and former Ulinzi goalkeeper Paul Okoth.
Ahead of the new season, Gor has lost Otieno and Ernest Wendo, who called time with the champions after the 2926 campaign, while Enock Morrison, the reigning KPL Most Valuable Player, left the club to pursue a new challenge abroad with Sudanese giants Al-Merrikh.
