CECAFA Kagame Cup: Gor Mahia and Akonnor eager to prove critics wrong after knockout qualification

Kenyan representatives Gor Mahia edged Djibouti’s Garde Républicaine 1–0 to climb to the top of Group A and secure their place in the semi-finals, as Tusker FC suffered elimination from their group.
Match outcomes
Paul Okoth struck home in the fourth minute, with his goal proving sufficient for K’Ogalo, who entered the final matchday trailing group leaders Vipers SC of Uganda.
Gor Mahia’s victory allowed them to finish top of the group on goal difference over Vipers SC and Rwanda’s APR FC, after the Rwandan army side earned a 2–1 comeback win against Vipers in the other group fixture.
Despite Vipers taking an early lead through Gus Mulongo, APR fought back to score two goals, handing David Lavagne’s men their first loss of the campaign.
The defeat came just days after Vipers had celebrated a massive 1–0 victory over Charles Akonnor’s Gor Mahia on Monday, July 27, 2026.
The results highlighted the delicate standings of the regional competition, with Vipers, who entered the group stages in the lead, only advancing as the group runners-up with a goal difference above APR.
David Lavagne, Vipers’ coach, decried how his team lost focus and never enforced matters in the encounter.
“We could play well, but we were inconsistent and did not maintain our focus. We conceded a goal, and we should know how to manage the game after scoring. The goals we conceded were very easy,” he stated.
For Kenyan champions Gor Mahia, the result is a welcome relief for the club’s technical bench and players who were increasingly coming under some heat from a section of their fans back home.
Coach Charles Akonnor and his staff had come under sharp scrutiny for their tactics after the loss to Vipers, and despite only a solitary-goal win over the minnows, Gor now has the chance to prove its critics wrong as they head to the deeper stages of the regional games.
The club has stated that it intends to use the games to competitively assess its ranks and new arrivals, and it remains to be seen how the bench strikes the balance between the pressure to perform at the regional tournament and the bigger picture of getting a fair outlook of where the team stands heading to the new season.
Early exits
Thursday’s action also saw five teams officially eliminated from the tournament. Kenya’s other representatives, Tusker FC, under coach Julien Mette, were among those suffering a premature exit.
The Brewers fell to a narrow 1–0 defeat against Rwanda’s Rayon Sports at the FERWAFA Complex, marking back-to-back losses following their opening defeat to Al Hilal.
K’Ogalo now awaits their opponent in the next elimination stage. The quarterfinal stages are set to be played starting on Tuesday, August 4, 2026.
