Kenya Lionesses captain Sheila Chajira has been appointed as an Athlete Role Model for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games.

Her appointment was confirmed by Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya through a congratulatory note.

In a Facebook statement issued on Sunday, April 19, 2026, Mvurya praised Chajira’s selection, describing it as a major milestone not only for the player but also for Kenyan sport as a whole. He noted that her leadership and dedication on and off the pitch had earned her respect across the continent and made her a fitting ambassador for young athletes, after guiding the national team at the HSBC SVNS 2 assignments.

Mvurya further stated that Kenya takes great pride in seeing one of its athletes earn recognition on the global stage. He expressed confidence that Chajira would represent the country with distinction and inspire many more young sportsmen and women.

YOG inauguration

Since the inaugural Singapore 2010 YOG, the Athlete Role Model programme has been a central component of each edition, providing the young athletes competing with a chance to learn from experienced Olympians.

The Athlete Role Models will be on the ground in Senegal to engage with competing athletes, providing support and advice around competition and taking part in educational workshops. These workshops cover topics such as career management, injury prevention and mental preparation, among many other things.

They will also attend training sessions, engage with the local community, support the athletes from the sidelines and be there to congratulate them at victory ceremonies.

The Dakar 2026 YOG will take place from Saturday, October 31, 2026, to Friday, November 13, 2026, bringing together around 2,700 young athletes aged up to 17 across three host zones: Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly.
