Kakamega Homeboyz honours Silas Abung’ana by sponsoring son’s education
By Joel Masibo, March 4, 2026Football Kenya Federation Premier League outfit Kakamega Homeboyz has honoured the club’s departed defender Silas Abung’ana by sponsoring his son’s education.
In a club statement on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, Homeboyz confirmed that club President Cleophas Shimanyula has enrolled the defender’s son David Maloba on the club’s program that will see him through his education, barely two weeks after his burial in Kakamega.
”True to his word, on March 3, ten days after the burial of the late Silas Abungana, club president Cleophas Shimanyula honoured his pledge by ensuring that Abungana’s son, David Maloba Abungana, resumed his education. Mr Shimanyula facilitated David’s admission to Lukala Primary School in Malava, where he will undertake his studies through to high school level under the club’s support program,” the statement read in brief.
While receiving treatment at the Kakamega County General Hospital on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, Abungana succumbed to his head injuries inflicted on him by his brother over a domestic brawl.
Abungana passes away
”Kakamega Homeboyz Football Club is deeply devastated by the untimely demise of Silas Abungana. The club can confirm that Silas passed away a few minutes before midnight on Wednesday, February 4, while receiving treatment at Kakamega County General Hospital, after succumbing to head injuries sustained during an attack on Tuesday, 3 February night. During this incredibly difficult time, we respectfully request privacy for Silas’ family, teammates, friends, and club officials as we come to terms with this unimaginable loss. The club will issue further communication in due course. Rest in Peace, Silas,” Homeboyz confirmed the sad news.
Meanwhile, Kakamega Homeboyz later announced that the main person of interest linked to the demise of club defender Silas Abungana has been apprehended. The man at the centre of Abungana’s death is believed to be his brother.
In a club statement on Saturday, February 7, 2026, the Bukhungu-based outfit confirmed the development via a Facebook post.
”The perpetrator behind the death of our dear brother Silas Abungana has been apprehended. We appreciate the swift action by the authorities as we continue to mourn and seek justice for Silas. Forever in our hearts, Silas,” the statement read in part.
It is also reported that the Director of Public Prosecutions has arraigned the prime suspect in Abung’ana’s death, before the High Court in Kakamega over the alleged murder of his brother.
