J.J. Masiga: Ingwe’s timeless forward who defined AFC Leopards’ golden era

J.J. Masiga in numbers
Active between 1976 and 1988, Masiga was the embodiment of the traditional No. 9, a lethal finisher who consistently delivered when it mattered most.
Wearing the iconic jersey number 9, Masiga carved out a reputation as a ruthless striker, combining physical presence, intelligent movement and an unerring eye for goal. His impact is best reflected in the numbers: 118 goals for Ingwe, a tally that places him as the club’s all-time second-highest scorer, a remarkable feat that has stood the test of time.
Masiga’s goal-scoring exploits were instrumental in one of the most successful periods in AFC Leopards’ history. During his tenure, the club clinched five league titles, lifting the championship in 1980, 1981, 1982, 1986 and 1988. These triumphs cemented Leopards’ dominance domestically and established Masiga as a central figure in the team’s success.
Beyond local glory, Masiga also helped Ingwe shine on the regional stage. AFC Leopards won the CECAFA Club Championship four times during his era, triumphing in 1979, 1982, 1983 and 1984, further underlining the striker’s influence in continental competitions.
Today, J.J. Masiga, a dentist by profession, is celebrated not just for his goals and medals but for the standards he set as a striker and leader. His name remains synonymous with excellence at AFC Leopards. Years later, after hanging up his scoring boots, Ingwe have been struggling to win the elusive Kenyan Premier League title.
Ingwe’s impressive run
However, after Ingwe last won a league title in 1998, the 2025/26 season looks to be working in favour of Fred Ambani’s men. After starting the current campaign on a shaky note, Leopards have found rhythm at the den, going toe-to-toe with arch rivals Gor Mahia for the top prize.
Currently, AFC Leopards are placed second on the log with 36 points in 18 outings, four points behind K’Ogalo with a game in hand.
