I cannot sleep: Sofapaka coach admits feeling pressure after Gor Mahia defeat

Sofapaka coach Ezekiel Akwana has stated that he cannot afford to get sleep or rest amid his team’s dismal run in the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League.
Ranked second from the bottom of the pile, Sofapaka’s miseries were further compounded on Saturday, January 31, 2026, after Gor Mahia scored three first-half goals to extend their dismal run to 11 games without a single victory.
With the threat of relegation now more imminent, Akwana has admitted that he cannot afford to rest, asserting that his immediate task will be devising a resurgence strategy and redressing their dwindling fortunes.
Under Pressure
“I am under pressure; I cannot sleep when we are on such a streak. We now have a two-week break before we resume our next game against Murang’a Seal. We are going to work on the team in the period and be ready to salvage our season,” he stated.
The thrashing at the hands of Gor Mahia saw the Batoto Ba Mungu‘s sorry streak hit 11 games.

Conversely, the tie marked a pivotal moment for league leaders Gor Mahia, who have now created a four-point buffer between them and close challengers AFC Leopards.
Reacting to the team’s display en route to the emphatic victory, Akonnor noted that his charges were a composed side and fittingly got the result.
Proud
“We were tactically sound and played with composure. We have to be ambitious. We scored three in the first half, and we have to be proud of the boys. We did create chances in the second half but did not score. Assifuah was a menace all around after coming on, and it is unfortunate he did come out for a goal,” he added.
Akonnor also addressed the ongoing tight proceedings atop the FKF Premier League standings with rivals AFC Leopards hot on their heels in mounting the challenge.
“The results mean a lot, but we still have to keep pushing. The race is not over until it is over. We still have AFC Leopards, who are trying their best to push. What is important is we are focused and keen to maintain our position in the table. Eventually, we will see what happens at the end of it,” he explained.
