Hussein Mohammed confirms Kenya United Cup launch postponement
By Joel Masibo, February 4, 2026Football Kenya Federation President Hussein Mohammed has confirmed that the postponement of the inaugural Kenya United Cup, a nationwide tournament designed to run from the sub-county level through to the national stage.
In a statement posted on his X account on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, the FKF chief confirmed the development after meeting national grassroots football executives from all 48 FKF branches. The tournament was scheduled to be officially launched on Wednesday afternoon, February 4, 2026, at the State House, Nairobi.
”Together with my NEC members, I met with National grassroots football executives from across all 48 branches as we continue to map the development and future of Kenyan football,” Mohammed said.

Despite the postponement, Mohammed asserted that the grassroots football executives are committed to developing the game at the ward level, with much emphasis put on the youth and women’s football.
”As much as the highly anticipated Kenya United Cup launch that was scheduled for today has been postponed to a later date, we agreed to tirelessly work as a team in growing and developing our football from ward level with a focus on youth and women football. Grassroots football is the foundation of all football.” He added in a statement.
Developing the game

The President’s Cup is a nationwide football competition set to take place across all the counties. It is organised by the Football Kenya Federation in partnership with several government ministries, including the Ministry of Sports.
The competition will start from the county level before advancing to the regional level and finally to the national level, with the grand prize for the national champions being Ksh10 million.
On matters developing Kenaya’s football, Hussein Mohammed and FKF Women NEC representative, Kerubo Momanyi, recently had a follow-up meeting with Ambassador Arnaud Suquet and his team at the French Embassy to progress their discussions following the successful engagements with the city of Miramas and the Olympique de Marseille football club earlier this month.
They also discussed infrastructure development, capacity building initiatives, the economy of sports, and the commercialisation of football. Mohammed said FKF is committed to building relationships and collaborations that will last for generations to come.
