Gor Mahia suffer huge injury blow ahead of tricky clash against FKPL title-ambitious Shabana
By Luke Oluoch, March 16, 2026Gor Mahia FC’s preparation for their next weekend clash against Shabana FC has been thrown into disarray with news of a fresh injury setback.
In a statement on Monday, March 16, 2026, K’Ogalo confirmed that Owino will be out for a period of six weeks. The centre back was stretchered off and rushed to the hospital during Sunday’s win over Ulinzi Stars.
According to the club, Owino went down on the pitch, visibly distressed and complaining of severe pain and difficulty moving his leg.
Muscular tear
The club have since confirmed their worst fears, with team doctor Brian Odongo disclosing that scans revealed a muscle tear.

“He was referred for further evaluation, where an MRI confirmed a partial tear of the lower medial gastrocnemius muscle belly,” Odongo stated, as quoted by the club official portal.

The doctor outlined a clear timeline for the defender’s recovery. Sylvester will now begin a period of medication and rest, followed by a structured rehabilitation program.
Recovery
“He is expected to be out for six weeks before returning to play, subject to his recovery progress,” Odongo added.
The news implies that the defender will also miss the Harambee Stars FIFA Series matches after earning a nod in Benni McCarthy’s 23-man team for the international window.
Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor has termed his miss a huge blow to the club as they intensify their chase for the league honours.
“It’s a big blow to us, more so at this crucial stage of the season,” Akonnor admitted.
“We will have to find a way to navigate with the available players because they are equal to the task. We just hope for no setback again in terms of injuries,” he added.
Gor welcomes third-placed Shabana FC on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at the Nyayo National Stadium. Owino’s absence implies that Gor will make do without the defensive stalwart.
