Gor Mahia coach gives Kariobangi Sharks plaudits after goalless draw
By Luke Oluoch, April 4, 2026Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor conceded that Kariobangi Sharks performed well after the struggling team held Gor Mahia to a goalless draw in an FKF Premier League match.
In a gesture of sportsmanship following the draw at Moi Kasarani on Saturday, April 4, 2026, Akonnor admitted the clash was delicately poised and could have gone either way.
Fair result
“The game could go either way. They (Sharks) had chances to score, and any side could have lost the game. So the result is a fair outcome,” he stated.
“The opponent is a team that knows their game. They disturbed us and never let us settle, to their credit. The first half was not that good, and we wanted to come up for the final half more assertively, but it was not to be,” he stated.
Missed chances
Despite having an extended period of rest during the international break, a return to league action proved frustrating as Sharks battled Gor in a closely fought encounter that saw both teams come close to scoring from open chances, notably through Samuel Kapen and David Majaka.
Kapen missed an open chance after fluffing his lines with only custodian Sebastian Wekesa to beat for the opener. Meanwhile, Majak also failed to get the ball under his stride from a ball that had already beaten keeper Gad Matthews in what would have been an easy tap into a gaping net.
The Ghanaian, while admitting his charges never played to their full strength, embraced the point earned against a side he says showed determination in the clash.
Not lost
“One point is okay; a fair result. But for us, we didn’t play the way we have been playing; I personally was not satisfied with our performance. The positive thing to take from the game is that we did not lose. We have to take the result in good faith. We take the one point and now shift our preparation for the coming matches,” he stated.
With the draw, Gor Mahia maintains its spot at the summit of the FKF Premier League table with 57 points from 26 matches.
The dropped points could, however, prove costly with close challengers, AFC Leopards, now mulling the chance to further close the four-point gap when they meet Murang’a Seal on Sunday, April 5, 2026, in a rescheduled clash.
