Gor Mahia coach explains significance of win over Ulinzi Stars after AFC Leopards slip-up

By , March 16, 2026

Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor has termed his team’s victory over Ulinzi Stars a significant result in the league title race, coming after their close championship challenger fell apart.

Speaking after Sunday’s March 15, 2026, win over Ulinzi Stars, the Ghanaian described the match as a potential league turning point.

Gor hit the soldiers for three goals to inch closer to reclaiming the league title as they opened a ten-point cushion between them and the chasing pack of AFC Leopards and Shabana FC.

AFC Leopards slip

“It is good to move ten clear; it was one of the defining moments as far as the championship goes. We knew because AFC slipped on Saturday, we had a chance to capitalise, and we needed to take it by being smart on the pitch and taking our chances.”

Akonor, however, added that the game demanded the best of his charges as they approached the tie, knowing the enormity of the task against the struggling outfit.

Enormous task

“Today, we needed to dig deeper. We knew we wouldn’t get that many chances. We are happy to win the three points,” he added.

Kogalo boosted its chances of regaining the FKF Premier League title, which slipped through their fingers last season. This outcome could be pivotal in defining the 2025/26 league title race.

Gor’s push for the league silverware had taken a massive boost a day earlier after Leopards, who have been their closest and fiercest challengers, fell to a surprise defeat to Mathare on Saturday.

The favourable proceedings stretched to Sunday as Shabana FC, another challenger, also dropped vital points in the league after a surprise 2-1 defeat at home against Kariobangi Sharks.

With less than ten games to conclude the season and the daylight created between them and their pursuers, the Green Army faithful could now start counting their chickens if the club can sustain their impressive run to the final matches of the league.
