Gor Mahia coach: APS Bomet embarrassed us in the first leg

By , February 16, 2026

Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor described their first-leg 4-1 defeat to APS Bomet as an embarrassing outcome for the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League leaders.

Speaking after the Sunday, February 15, 2026, second-leg clash, Akonnor hailed his side’s victory over an opponent that had previously shown them little respect and pushed them to their limits.

“Last time they beat us 4-1 and sort of embarrassed us,” he said. “We approached this match with great seriousness and determination, knowing how crucial the win would be. We are looking at an opponent who does not give us respect and is unafraid. They were also keen on pushing us to our limits,” he stated.

The Ghanaian tactician also praised his players for quickly processing instructions and executing the game plan effectively.

“The boys are processing things very well, and it makes us very happy,” he added.

Ebenezer Assifuah’s early strike set K’Ogalo on course for the victory before Jackson Dwang doubled the advantage in the second half. A late goal from Hansel Ochieng gave APS Bomet hope and set up a tense finish at Kericho Green Stadium, but Gor Mahia held on to secure the points and extend their fine league form.

Despite the narrow margin, Akonnor commended his team’s determination.

“Today’s tactic was to stay compact, which led to our first goal. In the second half, we changed formation, and it worked well as we scored again,” he explained. “It was far from easy—the opponents pressed us hard—but we overcame it. These three crucial points were very much needed for us today,” he added.

Gor Mahia’s implosion

In the reverse fixture pitting the two at Nyayo National Stadium, K’Ogalo started brightly and drew first blood just five minutes into the contest through Ghanaian forward George Amonoo.

Bomet responded emphatically as Hansel Ochieng turned the game on its head with two surreal strikes in the 39th and 42nd minutes, sending his side into the break with a 2-1 lead.

After the interval, APS Bomet maintained their dominance and extended their lead further with two late strikes in the 77th and 87th minutes, in a very uncharacteristic implosion of the Gor Mahia.
