Gor Mahia and Harambee Stars legend Allan Thigo is dead
By Kiplagat Sang, May 9, 2026Kenya’s football fraternity has been thrown into another state of mourning after Harambee Stars and Gor Mahia legend Allan Thigo died.
K’Ogalo have confirmed that the iconic footballer figure, who was a midfielder during his time, died on Saturday, April 9, 2026.
Gor Mahia mourn Thigo
“It is with deep sadness that we mourn the passing of former player and coach Allan Thigo, a figure whose dedication and passion for football were remarkable,” the record Kenya Premier League champions said in a statement shared on their social media pages.
“Thigo had a solid 12 seasons with us between 1970 and 1981, scoring 88 goals and leading us as a player/coach to the 1976 league title, unbeaten. He was also part of the squad in the 1979 Africa Cup Winners’ Cup. His contribution to Kenyan football and the Gor Mahia family will always be remembered.
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, teammates and fans during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace. Rest in peace, legend.”

Owalo remembers Thigo
Gor Mahia’s patron, Eliud Owalo, also expressed his condolences following Owalo’s death.
“It is with great sorrow that I have learnt of the death of Allan Thigo, one of Gor Mahia’s and Kenya’s greatest football legends. Thigo was a great attacking midfielder, nicknamed the ’90-Minute Man’, ‘the Midfield General’, ‘Ogango Wuon Pap’ and ‘Owner of the Field’.
“Allan played for and was the heartbeat of Gor Mahia for a record 13 years between 1970 and 1982, also serving as player-coach and leading Gor to an unbeaten league title in 1976. He also took Gor Mahia to the finals of the 1979 African Cup Winners’ Cup as player-coach,” Owalo said in a statement shared on his social media pages.

Apart from his fruitful seasons for Gor Mahia, Thigo also donned Harambee Stars colours and equally had impressive records.
“Thigo scored a record 88 goals for Gor Mahia and had 86 caps for the Kenya national soccer team, Harambee Stars,” Owalo added.
“Kenyan soccer has lost the greatest attacking midfielder of his generation, known for beauty, flow, and entertainment – connecting players and fans and orchestrating the finest midfield play ever displayed by a Kenyan soccer team.
“At this moment of grief, I lead the Gor Mahia family and entire Kenyan soccer fraternity in honouring a soccer idol whose footprint in Kenyan soccer will be remembered for generations to come.
“My deepest condolences to Allan’s family, relatives, friends and the entire Kenyan soccer fraternity. May the Almighty rest his soul in eternal peace.”
