Ghana have sacked head coach Otto Addo just 72 days before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following a string of disappointing results that raised concerns about the team’s form and direction.

The decision comes after back-to-back heavy defeats in international friendlies, including a 2-1 loss to Germany in Stuttgart and a 5-1 thrashing by Austria in Vienna.

These results extended the Black Stars’ losing streak to four matches, intensifying pressure on Addo and the technical bench ahead of the global tournament.

In a brief statement on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, released after the Germany match, the Ghana Football Association confirmed that it had “parted ways” with Addo, adding that the decision was effective immediately. The federation also noted that it would announce a new technical direction for the team in due course.

“The Ghana Football Association will communicate the new technical direction of the Black Stars in due course.”It added.

Addo, 50, had only recently begun his second stint as Ghana’s head coach in March 2024. Born in Germany, he spent his entire playing career in Europe but represented Ghana internationally, earning 15 caps.

His return was initially seen as a move to bring stability and continuity, especially after guiding the team in previous competitions.

However, inconsistent performances and failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations cast doubt on his leadership.

Despite having a talented squad featuring Premier League players like Antoine Semenyo and Mohammed Kudus, Ghana struggled to translate individual quality into cohesive team performances.

Defensive lapses, lack of consistency, and tactical concerns were frequently highlighted during Addo’s tenure.

The timing of his sacking presents a major challenge for Ghana, which must now quickly appoint a new coach and rebuild confidence ahead of the World Cup.

The tournament, set to take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, leaves little room for adjustment.

Ghana are drawn in a competitive group and will open their campaign against Panama on June 18, before facing England and Croatia in their subsequent matches.
