FKF steps in after Kenya Women Premier League teams boycott matches

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed has reaffirmed the federation’s commitment to advancing women’s football in the country following a consultative meeting with FKF Women Premier League clubs on Tuesday, March 17, 2026.

Speaking after the engagement, Mohammed revealed that the meeting provided a platform for open and detailed discussions around the specific challenges facing women’s football in Kenya.

The meeting follows an organised boycott of FKF Women’s Premier League matches over the weekend by a section of clubs, where participating teams lamented a wide range of challenges facing the league.

Importance of collaboration

He emphasised the importance of collaboration between the federation and clubs in addressing these issues and unlocking the game’s full potential.

”Together, we explored strategies to collectively overcome these hurdles and elevate women’s football. As FKF, we will continue engaging with the clubs to foster a thriving environment for women’s football to flourish,” Mohammed said in a statement.

According to the FKF boss, the session focused on identifying practical and collective solutions that can help improve the standards, competitiveness, and overall growth of the women’s game. He noted that the federation is keen on maintaining continuous dialogue with clubs to ensure their concerns are heard and addressed effectively. Mohammed expressed optimism about the future of women’s football, describing it as a sector with enormous room for growth if well supported.

He highlighted FKF’s intention to take deliberate and structured steps aimed at creating a sustainable environment where female players and teams can thrive. Central to these efforts, he pointed out, will be the use of existing frameworks such as the FKF Women’s Desk and the FKF Women’s Committee.

Potential to grow

”Women’s football has immense potential for growth. We will take deliberate actions to find sustainable solutions through established structures, including the FKF Women’s Desk and FKF Women’s Committee, to propel women’s football forward,” he added.

With the FKF Women’s Premier clubs barely surviving due to luck of league sponsor, these bodies are expected to play a crucial role in shaping policies, driving development programmes, and ensuring that the women’s game receives the attention and investment it deserves, just like the men’s league.

The FKF President’s remarks signal a renewed push by the federation to elevate women’s football, with a clear focus on long-term solutions and inclusive progress, shortly after a section of the FKF Women’s Premier League clubs staged a boycott to air their grievances.
