FKF PL: KCB spoil the party for Mathare United as Homeboyz, Mara Sugar thriller ends even
By Luke Oluoch, January 31, 2026The race for the Football Kenya Premier League continued to gather heat with KCB upsetting Mathare United in a 2-1 comeback win in Nairobi, as Kakamega Homeboyz and Mara Sugar battled to a thrilling six-goal thriller in Kakamega on Saturday, January 30, 2026.
The riveting action was witnessed in Bukhungu Stadium, where a resilient Mara Sugar valiantly batted to claim a crucial point against Patrick Odhiambo’s team.
Potiphar Odhiambo sent the host on an early lead eight minutes in from a penalty, but the clash would later head to the breather, even after Alex Imbusia levelled matters.
On the goals
Majak, who was fouled in the build-up to the first goal, turned scorer ten minutes after the restart, only for Mara Sugar to once again prove unbowed with Timothy Ndayala’s restoring parity.
The visitors’ resolve, however, appeared to be curtailed when Moses Mudavadi hit a third for the hosts with 20 minutes left on the clock.
The goal, which came off a Mara Sugar defender, elicited another fightback from the team, who surprisingly hit back two minutes later to level the tie for the third time.
Opener
Mathare were the first to create meaningful chances at goal, with Musa Masika and former Gor Mahia ace John Nyawir putting KCB’s rearguard under immense pressure.
The opener came in the 23rd minute after Isaac Omweri’s low drive was inadvertently returned home by a KCB defender.

The Slum Boys almost double the lead seven minutes in with the ex-Nairobi United ace in the thick of things. He brilliantly made space for himself at the edge of the area, but his effort this time lacked vision and sailed over and wide.
A moment of concentration lapse saw December Kisaka claim a timely equaliser just before the break.
A stunned Bankers’ side restarted the second period on two changes, with Francis Kahiro and Richard Omondi being replaced by Mathew Rodgers Angal and Fortune Omoto.
The proceedings moved from good to better in the 52nd minute after Amatton Samunya nodded in an Angal corner kick for Robert Matano’s charges to turn the tables.
Mathare United’s late foray to claim a point in the clash proved futile, with injuries stifling John Kamau’s plans in the tie.
