Xabi Alonso reflects on Chelsea’s final pre-season win and Stamford Bridge welcome
By Joel Masibo, August 16, 2026Head coach Xabi Alonso was encouraged by Chelsea’s display against Real Sociedad as the Blues brought their pre-season schedule to a close with a 3-1 victory at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, August 15, 2026.
Morgan Rogers opened his Chelsea scoring account in the early stages before Joao Pedro added two goals after the interval to secure a comfortable win for the hosts.
The fixture also gave Alonso the chance to introduce several players who had only recently returned to the squad following their involvement at the FIFA World Cup. Rogers, Maxence Lacroix and Reece James were among those given valuable minutes.
Alonso’s pre-season reflections
Reflecting on the final warm-up match, Alonso said: ‘It was a very good last preparation game,’
He acknowledged that the encounter provided different players with varying levels of preparation, while also identifying areas that still require attention before the competitive season begins.
‘For some players it was the first one and the last one. For us, there were some good things, some things we can improve. It’s normal at this moment for some players.
‘It was great to have all the team together. Some of them after three days could play for 60 minutes. It was the last test. Now we have a whole week to prepare for Fulham, but it was a good feeling in the stadium.’
The match was also significant for Alonso personally, as it marked his first appearance at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea’s head coach in front of the club’s home supporters.

The Spaniard received a warm reception from the crowd before kick-off, an experience that clearly left an impression on him.
‘It was emotional to feel my first time in the new home,’ said Alonso. ‘A great reception from the supporters to the team and to the new staff, myself as well, so delighted.
‘We want to create good connections and have that support. We want to give them good football so they will give us energy, and we connect. To have a good atmosphere here in the stadium will be a massive boost for the team.’
With the final friendly now completed, Chelsea have a full week to work on their preparations before beginning their competitive campaign against Fulham.
Alonso will be hoping the positive atmosphere generated by the supporters, combined with the return of key players and the encouraging result against Real Sociedad, provides a strong foundation for the season ahead.
