Xabi Alonso explains why he is impressed by Joao Pedro, reveals Chelsea’s ambition
By Luke Oluoch, August 21, 2026Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has heaped praise on Brazilian forward João Pedro, highlighting his desire and goalscoring prowess as crucial attributes for the Blues’ upcoming campaign.
The 24-year-old, who arrived at Stamford Bridge last season from Brighton & Hove Albion, has been tipped to spearhead Chelsea’s attack in his second year with the club. His time in West London got off to a dream start when he helped the Blues win the FIFA Club World Cup less than two weeks after signing.
Now, he looks to build on that momentum in a revamped forward line alongside summer additions Danny Welbeck and Morgan Rogers under the Spanish manager.
“We talk a lot with João because he is not just a great player; he has a great personality,” Alonso said. “His development as a player and as a leader is very noticeable in every game. He has incredible focus and a real desire to have a big season. I am very happy and impressed with his character, and now it is our job to help him reach his goals,” the Spaniard said.
Switched jersey number
The striker recently committed his long-term future to the club by signing a contract extension through 2033 on Thursday, August 20, while also switching from the No. 20 shirt to the iconic No. 9. The move comes on the heels of an impressive 2025/26 campaign in which he registered 20 goals and 9 assists across all competitions.
Ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League opener against Fulham, Alonso stressed the importance of maintaining high standards throughout the gruelling league season and aiming as high as possible.
“Our ambition is to finish as high as possible—let us see where we are in May,” Alonso insisted. “We need the hunger to do well and to build a strong team spirit,” he said.
Chelsea’s campaign gets under way with a short trip along the Thames to take on London neighbours Fulham at Craven Cottage on Monday, August 23, 2026, at 10:00 pm.
