Why and how Chelsea’s deal for Lamine Camara collapsed
By Luke Oluoch, September 2, 2026Chelsea’s deal to sign midfielder Lamine Camara from Monaco has fallen through after a last-minute hitch in negotiations between the two clubs.
The tough-tackling Senegalese midfielder had been lined up as a replacement for Enzo Fernández, who completed a record-breaking deadline-day move to Manchester City. However, Xabi Alonso’s side was left frustrated in its pursuit after facing a late setback that thwarted the deal.
According to reports, the Blues had verbally agreed to a Ksh8.22 billion (£47m) deal with Monaco to sign the star and proceeded to conduct his medicals with permission from the French Ligue 1 side.
Camara had already agreed to terms with Chelsea on a six-year contract, with an option for a further 12 months.
Camara replacement and Balogun factor
The deal, however, ultimately collapsed after Monaco withdrew in the final hours of transfer deadline day, reneging on the agreement. It has been established that the French club’s willingness to sell hinged on parallel transfer movements, including an expected sale of Folarin Balogun to Everton that ran into medical complications.
As internal conditions shifted late on deadline day, the Filipe Luís-coached side decided it could not afford to lose Camara without sufficient time to secure a replacement.
Confusion over Folarin Balogun’s aborted move to Everton had a knock-on effect on whether or not the French club would allow Camara to exit.
The West Londoners had been lining up replacements for the departing Argentine and were also discussing a Ksh 9.10 billion (£52m) deal with Roma for Manu Koné.
Xabi Alonso’s side still boasts plenty of options in midfield, having already bolstered the department this summer with the arrivals of Valentín Barco from Strasbourg, Morgan Rogers (who can also operate centrally), and Jordan Henderson, following the mutual termination of his Brentford contract.
On a concerning note, the club faces pressing injury issues. Moisés Caicedo is currently sidelined, while Reece James and Roméo Lavia have endured multiple seasons disrupted by fitness problems.
Furthermore, Henderson has yet to make his debut for Chelsea and, at 36, is in the twilight of his career. These depth concerns follow the earlier sale of Andrey Santos to Manchester United in the same window.
Chelsea, who have no European football this season, next face Arsenal in the English Premier League on Sunday, September 6, 2026.
