Transfer rumours: Manchester City ready to pursue Enzo Fernandez despite Chelsea deadline

By , August 20, 2026

Manchester City are preparing to make an approach for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, even though the former Premier League champions failed to submit an offer before the deadline set by the London club.

According to reports cited in the British media, City remain interested in the Argentina international and could still test Chelsea’s resolve with a formal bid.

Chelsea had given Manchester City until 5:00 pm on Friday, August 14, 2026, to make an offer for Fernandez. That deadline passed without a proposal being submitted, but the situation has apparently not ended City’s interest in the midfielder.

Fernandez, valued at around £120 million (Ksh 20.98 billion), has established himself as an important figure at Stamford Bridge since joining Chelsea and remains one of the club’s most valuable midfield assets. His performances and versatility have made him an attractive option for Pep Guardiola as City continue to reshape their squad.

City are undergoing significant changes in midfield following the departures of Rodri and Tijjani Reijnders, increasing the need for further reinforcements in the centre of the pitch.

Fernandez’s ability to contribute both defensively and in possession could make him a strong candidate for Guardiola’s plans. However, any attempt to take him away from Chelsea is likely to require a substantial financial commitment.

Rodri leaves

A departure of Spanish midfielder to Barcelona earlier in the week has left City needing another established central midfielder, potentially reopening the door for Fernandez. Chelsea, however, maintain that they do not intend to sell the Argentine during either the current transfer window or the January market.

City manager Maresca is understood to be a major admirer of Fernandez and is familiar with the qualities he could bring to his midfield.

Manchester City’s pursuit of the midfielder could therefore become one of the major stories of the closing stages of the transfer window, particularly if the club eventually decides to submit the offer it is reportedly considering.

For Chelsea, the key question will be whether they are prepared to entertain a major proposal for Fernandez or insist that the player remains part of their plans for the new season.

With City apparently still monitoring the situation, Fernandez’s future could remain a major talking point as the transfer window approaches its conclusion.
