Shea Lacey: Manchester United’s wonderkid tipped for greatness
By Joel Masibo, September 17, 2026Shea Lacey enjoyed a memorable personal milestone on Wednesday night, September 16, 2026, after scoring his first goal for Manchester United during their Carabao Cup meeting with Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford.
The 19-year-old was handed his first senior start for the club after previously making six appearances from the bench. He wasted little time making an impression, finding the net just eight minutes into the contest.
Lacey received the ball before moving inside onto his preferred left foot and producing a powerful finish that beat Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele.
His strike gave United an early advantage before Mason Mount added a second goal. However, the home side were unable to protect their two-goal cushion as Brighton staged a dramatic comeback, scoring three times without reply to send United out of the competition.
Lacey’s inclusion in the starting line-up came after an encouraging pre-season campaign. Michael Carrick had highlighted the youngster’s development and explained why he had earned an opportunity to start.
“He’s grown up and matured, as you’d expect from a young player,” said the boss.
“He’s doing all the right things and given himself the best chance, so I’m looking forward to seeing him tonight.”
Although the result overshadowed much of the occasion, Lacey’s breakthrough remains a significant moment in his development. Carrick acknowledged that the teenager’s achievement deserved greater recognition despite the disappointing outcome.
“It’s a shame that Shea’s moment, such a great moment for him, his family, his friends and the whole Academy, gets a bit lost,” Carrick added in his post-match press conference.
“It won’t for him when things settle down, but as we sit here now, it feels like it was a long time ago.”
For Lacey, the goal also placed him in distinguished company. The lifelong United supporter has now matched the feat achieved by Marcus Rashford, who scored on his first full appearance for the senior side as a teenager against FC Midtjylland in 2016.
Biography
The left-footed, Liverpool-born winger has represented England at youth levels.
Shea scored twice in 10 appearances for Manchester United Under-18s in 2023/24, as the Reds won the domestic title and Premier League Cup. He also appeared three times for the Under-21s. In 2024/25, he continued to develop with both sides, as well as training with the senior set-up on a couple of occasions, earning him a spot on the post-season tour to Asia.
He played for the Reds there against Hong Kong, China, and will take that experience into the 2025/26 campaign. In October 2025, Lacey trained with England’s senior set-up while part of the Three Lions’ Under-20s squad. He made his senior debut as a substitute during United’s 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa in December 2025, becoming the 256th different Academy graduate to represent Manchester United’s first team.
While United’s Carabao Cup campaign ended in disappointment, Lacey can take considerable personal encouragement from a night in which he announced himself on the senior stage with a goal that will remain an important landmark in his career.
