Rodri reacts to Manchester City’s verdict on Premier League charges
By Joel Masibo, September 26, 2026Former Manchester City midfielder Rodri has publicly supported the club following reports that an independent commission found the Premier League side guilty of 114 of the 115 alleged financial rule breaches.
City had been waiting for the outcome of the long-running case after being charged over alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial regulations. The proceedings have taken several years to reach this stage.
Rodri, who spent seven seasons at City between 2019 and 2026, was asked about the development while speaking to the media.
The Spain international made it clear that he continues to trust the club’s position and the legal process surrounding the case.
Rodri’s reaction on City’s verdict
“I believe in the justice system and I believe in the innocence of the club,” Rodri said on Friday, Septemebr 25, 2026, according to BeanymanSports.
Asked whether his belief was based on City’s repeated insistence that they had not broken the rules, he replied: “No, they always tell us the confidence they have on the innocence.
“When you look into someone’s eyes and talking that way…And we had the example in 2020 and the process was the same, and in the end, nothing happened.
“We were very calm in this way. You never saw the team nervous about these kinds of things.”
Rodri acknowledged that such disputes have become part of modern football, while stressing the importance of clubs complying with regulations.
“Nowadays, I’m not going to say it’s going to stay normal, but many teams – or some teams – go through these kind of situations and it’s part of football today.
“And everyone has to follow the rules, and for me, that’s great. I always praise the confidence that they never did something wrong, and we believe in that.”
Having faith in Man City
The former City midfielder also said he would continue to trust the club until evidence proves otherwise.
“The moment they prove wrong, we will believe the club. I’ve been there and I know how they work and how they co-operate, so that’s what I can tell you.”
The comments came shortly after Manchester City issued its own response to reports surrounding the verdict.
A club spokesperson said the Premier League’s disciplinary process had not yet reached its conclusion and maintained that City’s position had not changed.
“The Premier League process remains ongoing, with significant elements to be completed, and subject to strict confidentiality. As such Manchester City FC’s position remains consistent with the Club’s statement of February 2023.
“The Club has diligently respected due process for eight years on the basis that the Premier League Board and Executive would behave as an independent, impartial and fair-minded regulator, free from partisan influence.”
The case remains one of the most significant disciplinary matters in English football, with further developments expected as the Premier League process continues.
