Rare inspiration behind Manchester United’s 2026/27 away blue kit
By Joel Masibo, July 23, 2026Manchester United’s newly unveiled 2026/27 away shirt is more than just a fresh design, but a tribute to one of the club’s lesser-known kits while celebrating the rich history of blue in the club’s greatest triumphs.
Although Manchester United are synonymous with their famous red shirts, blue has played a significant role in some of the club’s most memorable achievements. The latest away strip combines those historic moments with a modern look, drawing inspiration from an uncommon jersey worn during the late 1980s.
Blue first became part of United’s greatest football memories when Sir Matt Busby’s side lifted the FA Cup in 1948. Two decades later, the colour gained legendary status after the Reds defeated Benfica 4-1 at Wembley in the 1968 European Cup final, with icons such as Bobby Charlton and George Best wearing an all-blue kit to secure the club’s first European crown.

Linked victories
The colour has since been linked to other famous victories. United wore blue during their dominant 3-1 win over Arsenal in the 2009 UEFA Champions League semi-final, inspired by outstanding displays from Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney. Rooney also captained the team in blue when they defeated Ajax to win the UEFA Europa League in Stockholm in 2017, completing the club’s collection of major trophies.
While those matches remain etched in supporters’ memories, the design of the new away jersey is heavily influenced by a much rarer shirt from the 1986-88 period.
The original strip served as United’s third-choice kit and was used only three times, all in away matches against Southampton at The Dell. Despite the team failing to win any of those fixtures, the jersey stood out because of its distinctive deep-blue appearance, highlighted by the adidas Trefoil logo and the Manchester United crest.
That shirt was worn by club greats including Bryan Robson, Norman Whiteside and Brian McClair during a pivotal era in United’s history. It also debuted in the season when Sir Alex Ferguson replaced Ron Atkinson as manager, marking the beginning of one of football’s most successful managerial reigns.

The 2026/27 away kit recreates several elements from that forgotten design, including the rich blue colour and subtle sheen across the front, while incorporating the club’s traditional red and white accents.
Manchester United hope the shirt will create new memories as the team prepares for its return to the UEFA Champions League this season. The club believes the latest design can become part of another successful chapter, whether through memorable European nights or by becoming a favourite among supporters.
By reviving one of the rarest shirts in the club’s history, United have transformed a little-known piece of their past into a modern symbol that a new generation of fans can embrace.
