Preview: Arsenal’s memorable home victories over Coventry City
By Joel Masibo, August 20, 2026Coventry City have returned to the Premier League after a lengthy spell away, bringing back memories of some entertaining meetings with Arsenal.
Before their 2026/27 season opener on Friday, August 21, 2026, at the Emirates Stadium, the two sides produced several memorable encounters during the 1990s and early 2000s, while more recent cup fixtures have continued the rivalry.
Here are six notable Arsenal victories over Coventry at home.
Arsenal 6-1 Coventry City – May 11, 1991
Arsenal celebrated their First Division title in emphatic fashion by dismantling Coventry 6-1 in front of their supporters.
The hosts took the lead in the 14th minute when Trevor Peake inadvertently headed into his own goal. Anders Limpar then doubled the advantage after collecting a clearance from David Seaman.

Coventry reduced the deficit before the interval through Kevin Gallagher, but Alan Smith restored Arsenal’s two-goal cushion with his 27th league goal of the campaign.
Limpar struck again shortly afterwards before completing his hat-trick after going around goalkeeper Steve Ogrizovic. Perry Groves then added a sixth goal to round off an unforgettable title-winning celebration.

Arsenal returned to the top of the First Division after recording their sixth consecutive victory, with Alan Smith reaching an important personal milestone.
Smith scored his 100th goal for the club after just eight minutes. Ian Wright created the opportunity by releasing Lee Dixon down the right, with Dixon’s cross allowing Smith to head past Ogrizovic.
Wright then produced a clever finish of his own, lifting the ball over the Coventry goalkeeper after getting to it ahead of former Arsenal defender Kenny Sansom.
The Gunners completed the scoring before half-time. Ogrizovic could only parry Paul Merson’s corner, and Wright’s floated delivery was headed into an empty goal by Kevin Campbell.

Despite Arsenal eventually winning comfortably, Coventry goalkeeper Steve Ogrizovic played a major role in preventing a much heavier defeat.
The veteran goalkeeper, then 42, produced a series of impressive saves, including a crucial stop from Oleg Luzhny that kept the game goalless at the break.
Five minutes into the second half, Thierry Henry finally broke Coventry’s resistance by racing through before calmly finishing beyond Ogrizovic.
Emmanuel Petit struck the woodwork, while Ogrizovic made three more saves to deny Marc Overmars. Arsenal eventually found a second goal in the 79th minute when Gilles Grimandi finished before Nwankwo Kanu added another two minutes later.

Sylvain Wiltord marked his first Arsenal appearance at Highbury with his maiden goal for the club as Arsene Wenger’s side defeated Gordon Strachan’s Coventry.
Wiltord opened the scoring in the 24th minute after charging down the right, wrong-footing Richard Shaw and firing beyond Magnus Hedman.
Arsenal extended their lead in the 72nd minute when Thierry Henry’s pass found Paulo Vernazza, who scored his only goal for the Gunners.
Coventry responded through Mustapha Hadji, whose superb free-kick gave the visitors hope. Marcus Hall then came close to an equaliser during stoppage time when his powerful volley struck the crossbar, but Arsenal held on.
Arsenal 6-1 Coventry City – September 26, 2012
Arsenal produced another six-goal demolition of Coventry when the teams met at Emirates Stadium in the League Cup third round.

The Gunners had to wait until the 39th minute to break the deadlock. Olivier Giroud opened his Arsenal account with his seventh appearance for the club, although he missed a penalty shortly after the interval.
That miss mattered little as Arsenal quickly took control. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain unleashed a powerful long-range effort before Andrey Arshavin added another.
Theo Walcott then made it 4-0 before Coventry pulled one back through Callum Ball. Ignasi Miquel scored the only goal of his Arsenal career to restore the four-goal advantage, with Walcott finding the net again to complete the rout.
Arsenal 4-0 Coventry City – January 24, 2014
The most recent meeting between the sides at the time saw Arsenal comfortably advance to the FA Cup fifth round.
Lukas Podolski was the star of the contest, scoring twice in the opening 27 minutes. He opened the scoring after rounding goalkeeper Joe Murphy before finishing, then doubled the advantage with a header following a flick-on from fellow German Per Mertesacker.
Olivier Giroud added a third after converting Kieran Gibbs’ cutback, effectively ending Coventry’s hopes of progressing.
Santi Cazorla completed the scoring in the 89th minute. Carl Jenkinson’s effort had been saved by Murphy, but the rebound fell perfectly for the Spanish midfielder to finish and seal another convincing Arsenal victory.
