Premier League returns: 5 things to watch as the new season begins
By William Muthama, August 21, 2026The wait is finally over. After a long break, football fans will get a taste of the world’s most watched and loved league when the 2026/27 Premier League season kicks off on Friday, August 21, 2026.
The campaign opens with champions Arsenal hosting newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium, setting the stage for another season of fierce competition, big transfers and plenty of drama across 38 matchweeks.
With new managers, promoted clubs and several high-profile signings adding fresh intrigue, here are five things to watch as the new season gets underway.
Arsenal title defence
Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal head into the new campaign as defending champions after ending a 22-year wait for the Premier League title last season.
The Gunners will begin their defence at home against Frank Lampard’s Coventry City, who have returned to the top flight after 25 years away.
Arsenal have strengthened their squad with the signing of Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle, but injury concerns, including those surrounding William Saliba, could test Arteta’s plans.
The bigger question will be whether Arsenal can handle the pressure that comes with being champions and become the first team in years to establish sustained dominance at the top.
Life after Guardiola
Manchester City begin a new chapter after Pep Guardiola’s departure brought an end to one of the most successful managerial eras in Premier League history.
Enzo Maresca has taken charge at the Etihad and faces the difficult task of maintaining City’s standards after they finished second last season.

Erling Haaland remains at the heart of the attack, while the arrival of Elliot Anderson adds another option to Maresca’s squad.
City begin their campaign at home against Bournemouth on Sunday, with the opening weeks likely to reveal how quickly the new manager can impose his ideas.
New managers arrive
The new season will also feature a major managerial shake-up, with a record nine clubs beginning the campaign under new bosses.
Andoni Iraola starts his Liverpool reign away to Newcastle in one of the weekend’s biggest fixtures, while Xabi Alonso takes charge at Chelsea and Matthias Jaissle begins his Newcastle tenure.

Marco Rose at Bournemouth and Oliver Glasner at Nottingham Forest are among the other new faces in the dugout.
Michael Carrick and Roberto De Zerbi also enter their first full seasons at Manchester United and Tottenham respectively.
The early results could quickly determine who settles into their new surroundings and who comes under pressure.
Promoted clubs battle
Coventry City, Hull City and Ipswich Town face the difficult task of adapting to life in the Premier League after winning promotion.
Coventry’s return is particularly notable after a 25-year absence from the top flight.

Hull City host Manchester United on Saturday, while Ipswich face Sunderland as they begin their battle for survival.
For the promoted sides, the challenge will be turning Championship momentum into Premier League results. Their recruitment, defensive organisation and ability to cope with the pace of top-flight football could determine their fate.
Transfers set tone
Big-money transfers have once again dominated the build-up to the new campaign, with clubs spending heavily to strengthen their squads.
Chelsea’s British-record £117 million (KSh20.7 billion)signing of Morgan Rogers and Tottenham’s capture of Sandro Tonali are among the deals attracting attention.
The opening weekend will provide the first chance to see whether some of the biggest arrivals can immediately make an impact.

There is also no shortage of eye-catching fixtures, with Brentford facing Tottenham, Fulham taking on Chelsea and Newcastle hosting Liverpool.
New rules aimed at tackling time-wasting could also change the rhythm of matches, giving referees another issue to monitor from the opening whistle.
After a long wait, the Premier League is back. New managers are settling in, champions are preparing to defend their crown and ambitious challengers are ready to test them.
The 2026/27 campaign begins with plenty of questions. The answers will come over the next 38 matchweeks.
