Christos Tzolis made an impressive first appearance in the Premier League for Arsenal, playing a key role as the Gunners began their title defence with a convincing 3-0 victory over Coventry City at Emirates Stadium.

The Greek winger was a constant threat from the left flank, repeatedly causing problems for the visitors with his movement, confidence and attacking intent.

Although Tzolis was not credited with an assist, his contribution was clear in both of Arsenal’s first-half goals. He regained possession high up the pitch before Kai Havertz finished the resulting move, while his dangerous delivery was mishandled by Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, allowing Bukayo Saka to score Arsenal’s second.

Warm reception

The 60,000-plus crowd responded enthusiastically whenever Tzolis received the ball, providing the summer arrival with plenty of encouragement during his memorable league debut.

“It was a really nice feeling, to be fair,” he smiled. “It was a great performance from everybody in front of 60,000 people. From the first minute, everybody was ready to win this game. I was very happy to have this performance, and we had a great game, so I’m very, very happy.

“I’m happy that I helped my team to win these two games. I felt the energy from the fans, especially in the first half. There was a lot of excitement when I had the ball and that gave me motivation to go with confidence in my actions. I felt it today and I hope that will be for the next games as well.

“I’m always trying to be involved to help my team and to make the right decisions. My teammates make it easier for me when they finish the actions or give the pass to me. Everything connects with each other.

“Everybody is at a high level and understands each other very quickly. That’s a big difference with a big team. When you’re champions of England, that means you’re at the top level, so everything makes it easier, even for me as a new player, to adapt quickly. Thanks to my teammates, they’re at the highest level.”

The match was not Tzolis’ first taste of English top-flight football. He previously featured 14 times for Norwich City during the 2021/22 campaign.

However, his time away from England has allowed him to develop further, gaining experience at other clubs and returning as a more complete and influential attacker.

The 2021/22 spell has also given him an understanding of what is required to compete in England’s top division. Tzolis believes that knowledge, combined with the progress he has made in recent years, will help him settle quickly at Arsenal.

Previous Premier League experience

Reflecting on his previous Premier League experience, he said: “That was a good challenge back then. It was totally different, but I learned a lot of things. I knew how the Premier League is, how physical it is, and I improved a lot in the last four years when I was at different clubs to be ready and perform at the highest level.

“I was feeling I had to be physically very strong first and then mentally as well, because it’s very important to be mentally ready to play in the Premier League. You learn a lot of stuff back then and now I have to show it.”

With his strong opening performance following his influential display in the Community Shield, Tzolis has already given Arsenal supporters plenty of reason to be excited about what he can contribute throughout the campaign.
