Mount’s injury scare, returning stars and talking points from Man United draw against PSG
By Luke Oluoch, August 8, 2026English giants Manchester United continued their fine preseason run with a 1-1 draw against Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday, August 8, 2026, in Sweden.
The tie was United’s fourth preseason test as manager Michael Carrick sought to assess his team’s fitness levels and coordination following their previous 2-1 victory against Atletico Madrid.
The French champions provided the needed stern test, with a trio of first-teamers in Matvey Safonov, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and Willian Pacho all starting. The latter stages saw even more first-team regulars enter the fray, including Nuno Mendes, Vitinha, and skipper Marquinhos as the game wore on.
Mason Mount injury concerns
Mason Mount was a major concern for United as he pulled out after just 19 minutes of the clash with a suspected injury. The English midfielder was assessed on the touchline before leaving the pitch, replaced by youngster Tyler Fletcher.
Meanwhile, new signing Youri Tielemans got his first minutes in a red shirt following his arrival from Aston Villa.
The Belgian midfielder entered the fray alongside the returning Bruno Fernandes at the hour mark with the game locked at 1-1.
Fernandes had chances to win it late on but failed to get his bearings right twice when attempting to beat Safonov. Young defender Harry Amass also fired over the bar from an angled shot after a goalmouth melee in the final stages, moments after United had come close through Shea Lacey, who saw his shot deflected wide with the keeper off his line.
Bryan Mbeumo stays on the goals
United will be thrilled with the form of Cameroonian international Bryan Mbeumo, who grabbed his third goal in two games as United fought back in Gothenburg to hold the French titans.
Mbeumo showed sharp instincts by pouncing on Amad Diallo’s initial shot to send a low drive past Illya Zabarnyi and Safonov for United’s equaliser.
The former Brentford star also drew a brilliant save from the Russian goalie off a quick counterattack, bending a curling left-footed strike toward the top corner that Safonov just managed to parry wide.
United’s next preseason engagement involves games against Leeds and AC Milan, who got overpowered in a 3-0 loss to Chelsea, and before they get their competitive campaign underway on August 22, when they host Hull City in their opening Premier League fixture.
