Mohamed Salah opens talks to join Turkish side Trabzonspor

The 34-year-old Egyptian is expected to land in Istanbul this Wednesday, August 5, 2026, to undergo his medical and sign the deal, the club confirmed.
“Professional footballer Mohamed Salah, with whom we have begun transfer negotiations, will be at Istanbul Atatürk Airport General Aviation Terminal at 12:00 on Wednesday, August 5,” a statement released by the club on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, read in part.
Hijack deals
The move comes just hours after the club confirmed it had begun negotiations with the former EPL star.
The startling declaration prompted potential hijacking attempts from Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad and Trabzonspor’s rivals Beşiktaş, but to no avail. Beşiktaş were also believed to be among the favourites after putting a strong financial offer on the table.
Salah is now set to arrive in Turkey ahead of his proposed move to the club.
Financial details
The Egyptian star will earn between Ksh 2.54 billion and 3.43 billion. His deal also involves substantial additional personal financial benefits, including agent commission and add-ons, and a 100 per cent share of jerseys sold abroad.
The player was on a Ksh86 million-a-week deal with performance‑related bonuses at the Merseyside club.
Arrival in Turkey
“The player is scheduled to arrive in Trabzon on the same day in the evening hours. The time and other details regarding the welcome program in Trabzon will be shared with the public through our club’s official communication channels during the day.”
Salah left Liverpool at the end of the season following the expiration of his contract. He represented Egypt at the 2026 World Cup in America, helping the Pharaohs to a first-ever World Cup knockout qualification before the team was eliminated by Argentina.
His exit completes his nine years at Anfield, during which he earned his place among the greats of Liverpool and the Premier League. The forward scored 257 goals and over 120 assists in 435 appearances for Liverpool, a feat bettered by only Ian Rush and Roger Hunt, who scored more in the club’s 134-year history.
Turkish club records
Despite being overshadowed by the legendary Turkish clubs Fenerbahçe, Beşiktaş, and Galatasaray, Trabzonspor is a force to be reckoned with in Turkish football folklore. The club won its maiden Süper Lig title in 1975–76, becoming the first Anatolian team (outside Istanbul) to win the top flight.
