In a statement on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, Dalglish said: “As my inadvertent social media post has indicated, I am currently undergoing treatment for cancer,” said Sir Kenny. “Unlike my mobile phone use, the treatment is going well.
“Ideally, this would have remained private because that’s the way it should be, but my useless technology skills have forced my hand.
“Obviously I did not mean to make this matter public so I would appreciate it if the privacy of my family and myself are respected.
“As ever, thank you to the wonderful medical staff who have shown incredible care and discretion, not just for me but for many, many others. They are a credit to themselves,” he said.

The former Scotland international explained that he had not intended for details of his illness to become public knowledge and appealed for understanding and respect for his family’s privacy during this period.
Liverpool Football Club, actively in search of a new manager ahead of next season, has expressed its unwavering support for one of its most celebrated figures, extending its best wishes to Dalglish and his loved ones as he continues treatment.
Club’s support
The club also echoed his appeal for privacy, urging supporters and the wider public to respect the family’s wishes while he focuses on his recovery.
Dalglish remains one of Liverpool’s most revered figures, having enjoyed immense success both as a player and manager, and the football community has rallied behind him following the announcement.
“The support, best wishes and love of everyone at Liverpool FC are, and will continue to be, with Sir Kenny and his family. The club would also like to underscore his request for privacy moving forward.” Liverpool said in a statement on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.

Sir Kenneth Mathieson Dalglish (born 4 March 1951) is a Scottish former football player and manager. He is regarded as one of the greatest players of all time as well as one of Celtic’s, Liverpool’s and Scotland’s greatest ever players. He made 515 appearances for Liverpool, playing as a forward.
In January 2011, Dalglish returned to Liverpool for a spell as caretaker manager after the dismissal of Roy Hodgson, becoming the permanent manager in May 2011. Despite winning the League Cup, which was the club’s first trophy since 2006, earning them a place in the UEFA Europa League, and reaching the FA Cup Final, Liverpool only finished 8th in the Premier League, and Dalglish was dismissed in May 2012. In October 2013, Dalglish returned to Liverpool as a non-executive director, and Anfield’s Centenary Stand was renamed after him in October 2018.
