Chelsea are exploring a deal to sign Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson as the London side looks to add more leaders within their ranks.
Reports of Chelsea pursuing the England international emerged on Monday, July 27, 2026, with David Ornstein among the leading sports journalists to first confirm the reports.
According to multiple reports, Chelsea are the leading contenders to sign Henderson from Brentford, with multiple Premier League sides interested in a move for the 36-year-old.
Why it is a shock move
Most football analysts have described the links as shocking due to the rivalry between Chelsea and Liverpool. Henderson is widely considered a Liverpool legend, as he captained the Reds and led them to winning the Premier League and Champions League while making 492 appearances in all competitions.
The midfield maestro started his career at Sunderland before joining Liverpool in 2011.
Chelsea and Liverpool rivalry over the past two decades has become one of the most intense in English football, mostly forged in cup finals and title run-ins rather than geography.
Ironically, given how heated it’s been, several players have crossed the divide. Fernando Torres’ move from Liverpool to Chelsea in 2011 was seen as a betrayal by the Reds at that time.
Why Henderson deal might happen
Key factors are driving the latest transfer news around Jordan Henderson, with several suitors looking to pounce and lure the talented and experienced midfielder from Brentford despite making 22 league starts for them last season, appearing a further 10 times as a substitute.
Henderson has a year left on his Brentford contract, but the Bees are willing to let him leave on a free transfer, so this would not cost Chelsea a transfer fee. He joined Brentford from Ajax, where he played 57 games between 2023 and 2025.
The 36-year-old was also part of Thomas Tuchel’s England squad at the 2026 World Cup this year but suffered a broken left arm after slipping while climbing over an advertising board during his side’s win over Mexico at the Estadio Azteca in the last 16 and had to have surgery. Having made one substitute appearance in England’s final group-stage game, he remained with the team after surgery as they lost to Argentina in the semi-finals.
The injury concerns could also be driving the latest decision by Brentford to put him on the transfer market.
Other reports indicate that Henderson could be linked to Chelsea after the Stamford Bridge club failed to sign Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka.
