Chelsea eye surprise move to sign Danny Welbeck from Brighton

Chelsea are exploring a surprise move for Brighton striker Danny Welbeck after head coach Xabi Alonso approved the veteran forward as an experienced attacking option for the upcoming season.

Transfer expert and Journalist Fabrizio Romano reported on Monday, July 27, 2026, that Chelsea had made an initial approach to understand the conditions of a potential deal, with discussions between the two clubs ongoing.

Alonso approves Welbeck move

According to Romano, Alonso has given the green light for Chelsea to pursue Welbeck as the club looks to add experience to its attacking line ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The 35-year-old enjoyed one of the best Premier League campaigns of his career last season, scoring 13 goals in 37 league appearances for Brighton and playing a key role in the Seagulls’ attack.

Chelsea are now actively exploring whether a deal can be reached to bring the former England international to Stamford Bridge.

A move for Welbeck would represent a significant change in Chelsea’s recruitment approach, which in recent years has focused primarily on signing young players with long-term potential.

With more than 400 Premier League appearances and spells at Manchester United, Arsenal and Brighton, Welbeck would bring valuable experience, leadership and versatility to one of the league’s youngest squads.

Should the move materialise, he would become another player to swap Brighton for Chelsea, following Robert Sánchez, Moisés Caicedo and João Pedro.

Competition in attack

Chelsea’s interest in Welbeck comes amid uncertainty surrounding the futures of several forwards at Stamford Bridge.

Liam Delap is reportedly facing increased competition for a regular starting place, while Nicolas Jackson has also been linked with a potential departure after speculation over his long-term future.

Adding Welbeck would give Alonso another proven Premier League striker capable of providing depth, experience and competition as Chelsea prepare to compete on multiple fronts this season.

Talks continue

Although no agreement has been reached, discussions between Chelsea and Brighton are ongoing as the Blues assess the possibility of completing one of the summer’s most surprising transfer deals.
